Season's Greetings... I am pleased to submit to you ACPP Newsletter #10. As we approach the end of the first full year of existence of ACPP, this represents a bit of a milestone. During our first full year of operation we have posted dozens of entries on our blog site, sent out ten newsletters, appeared in a number of hearings on a variety of public policy issues, and contracted to do several policy-related projects. And there is more to come, so stay tuned! I do want to take this opportunity to thank our Master of Social Work graduate student intern, Kacy Telfer, for compiling this issue of the ACPP Newsletter. She works in a high-level position in a local non-profit, is a graduate student, and is doing an intensive internship with ACPP. I don't think she is sleeping much, but her work is greatly appreciated. We are always pleased to work with students who are interested in internships, independent studies, or other working relationships with ACPP. Do you have colleagues, friends, family, or neighbors who may be interested in receiving the ACPP newsletter? If so, please forward this to them via the link at the end of the Newsletter. They will be invited to join the other 1,700 Alaskans who regularly receive the ACPP Newsletter. As always, you can unsubscribe at any time by clicking on "SafeUnsubscribe" at the bottom of this Newsletter. We'll be in touch in the new year... Lawrence D. Weiss Ph.D., M.S., Executive Director
Alaska is #1! Only not in that good way that we all like to think of it. When Men Murder Women (36 page PDF file), is an annual analysis of national male on female homicide statistics in single victim/single offender situations. An updated publication is released each year from the Violence Policy Center. The report for 2003 came out in September. ?Alaska is number one nationally in per capita domestic violence murder of women--again,? states Judy Cordell, Executive Director of AWAIC, the domestic violence shelter here in Anchorage. Visit the ACPP Blog for more information and statistics.
Here is some important information from the folks at Alaska Community Action on Toxics: "Klukwan, Inc. has again filed for a permit to aerially spray pesticides on 2000 acres of Long Island in Southeast Alaska, against the opposition from the Haida people of Hydaburg and other Southeast tribes, fisher groups, and conservationists." Visit the ACPP blog for more information about this issue. Also, visit the Department Of Environmental Conservation Pesticide Control Program and the DEC Public Notices Page.
The Department of Natural Resources has had some significant, even dramatic changes in the past few months. Commissioner Irwin?s memo and the subsequent loss of several high ranking officials means that gas line proposals will be facing increased scrutiny. Visit the ACPP Blog to view the "stunning" letter of resignation in its entirety.
ACPP has posted a series of informative entries about Medicaid, ranging from the basics of the program to specific initiatives and the policy implications. Did you know that approximately 1/4 of Alaskan adults rely on Medicaid? Did you hear that the "look-back" period may be extended to five years? This means if you've given away a significant amount in the past five years, it may affect your Medicaid eligibility. Are you curious to know if your Representative took part in the "spectacle of greed" that slashed $50 billion from the budget, including health care, child support enforcement, and assistance to the elderly and those with disabilities? Visit the following blog entries for this and other Medicaid related information: Medicaid in Alaska: The Basics
