Greetings!
Hello and Happy Spring! Even though it's a bit chilly out today here in New England, the weekend was spectacular. I had some time to drive around my town taking pictures and ended up with a nice little pictorial of my "Duxbury Day", which you can read more of below.
I'd like to congratulate my niece Katie, who graduated yesterday from Boston College with a degree in Art History. Aurhor and historian David McCullough gave a fantastic address on the importance of education (it's more than just facts!) and reading and life long learning. Speaking of learning, I'd also like to congratulate my other niece Libby (right in photo above) who is completeing a two year volunteer teaching program in Chicago's inner city. Yay Merrill Girls!
I welcome new sponsor Inviting Lighting and wish to thank them for their support of ::Surroundings::. If you are interested in sending your message to over 20,000 monthly readers, please let me know.
There are lots of other interesting tidbits below - including a virtual tour of the Boston Design Center Dream Home and a video on how we perceive color. So, enjoy!
As always, happy decorating!
Warmly,
Linda

Marie Antoinette at the Met

April's Architectural Digest has a fascinating piece about the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly renovated Wrightsman Galleries. The piece focuses on their recreation of an embroidered fabric - embroidery by Marie Antoinette herself - that once graced a suite of furniture by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené for use by the Queen at the Chateau de Saint-Cloud, a 17th century palace that Louis XVI purchased for Marie in 1784. The Chateau was burned, but amazingly, some of the furniture still exists, as does a sample of the original embroidery.
