2 Killer Mountain Cabs
under $30 a bottle

OBSIDIAN RIDGE Red Hills, Lake County 2007 and
AUDELSSA Sonoma Valley 2007

September 9, 2010
Greetings!
Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. I had a great one. While Joe watched the shop over the weekend, Holly and I went to the water. Monterey Peninsula. Crashing waves, sea air, great food and wine to match. I was on a string of ordering a different Morgan wine every place we went. Since they're based in Salinas, not far away, you see them a lot. I had the streak at 3 (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) until we went to a Passion Fish Restaurant in Pacific Grove. PETER MICHAEL Chardonnay "Cuvée Indigène" 2008 for $120? Heck yeah! And it was delicious: rich and creamy with loads of fruit and cashmere texture. Dynamite with our fried oyster salad and sautéed sea scallops. Afraid we have no Cuvée Indigène to sell here. I wish

Money Wine
September 9, 2010
Money Wine: a wine that anyone who loves good, rich, utterly delicious wine will enjoy A LOT, and is an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE.
TODAY
Two KILLER Mountain Cabernets for very good prices.
They're not Napa Valley, but darn close.

OBSIDIAN RIDGE  Cabernet Sauvignon
Red Hills, Lake County 2007  $28
$28/bottle, $300/case
Obsidian Ridge Cabernet 2007

If you've been reading and shopping with Back Room Wines for a while, you may recall Obsidian Ridge Cabernet 2003, the inaugural release.
The 2003 was good...would love to try one now. Year after year, this Cabernet achieves steal, super value or "Money Wine" status. Explaining why it's so good is easy: 2600+ foot elevation, hillside vineyard of red soil and obsidian rock means the vines struggle, the grapes grow thick-skinned and intense, the resulting wine is super-concentrated. Why it's such a good price I guess makes sense: because they can. Land doesn't cost so much in Lake County. Planting a world-class vineyard costs the same as in Napa, but in the "big picture" of cash in-cash out, $28 a bottle to you works. As a merchant, and for you Big Cab lovers out there, it DEFINITELY works!
This rugged, complex MOUNTAIN CAB is ever-so-slowly emerging from its slumber. Give it lots and lots of air (in you own a Vinturi, use it).  Smell and taste black currants, dark chocolate, mocha, tobacco, black olive. Boasts a ton of tannins. The key is that the fruit is plenty rich and concentrated to seemingly softent the tannins. So, BIG CAB lovers can enjoy it now. If you let it breathe. All the better if you drink it with a beautiful piece of red meat.

AUDELSSA Cabernet Sauvignon
Sonoma Valley 2007 $25
$25/bottle, $270/case
Audelssa Cabernet 2007

I can't think of a better wine to pull out the term "iron fist in a velvet glove" than this Audelssa. The power and intensity indicate it's a Mountain Cab, but the tannins are supple and smooth. You know, like velvet.
Like the Obsidian Ridge, Audelssa planted and owns their vineyard. We're in Sonoma Valley here, around 15 miles north of the Sonoma-town in the hills east of the valley floor. We're on the Mayacamas Mountain range, in fact, on the Sonoma side. It's an a amazing vineyard-one that makes you wonder why someone would take such efforts to do this. It's steep, rugged land that's hard to get to and hard to work. Grapes don't like it here either because they have to work hard to grow. The wine they make is very fine, however, and when you drink it you'll be happy.
Winemaker Erich Bradley (co-owner and winemaker for Sojourn Cellars) brings a softer "Burgundian" approach to the Audelssa wines. Tannin management and coaxing layers of flavors to come out make for a tasting experience that makes the $25 price almost laughable. Smell and taste smoky black cherry, mocha, black olive, dark earth and Maduro cigar (Maduros are the almost-black colored cigars. They're kinda chocolaty and of course smoky.). It's a silky pleasure in the mouth and then it gets richer, fuller and more complex on the 20 second finish. Multi-layered, delicious now and will improve for another five years, this is highly recommended if you like Bordeaux from a great vintage like 2000 and 2005.
