Greetings!
Pleasant Friday to you. Thought a Cab Alert would make your TGIF even finer. Got a dandy Cab for you. 200 case production sold almost only in Northern California. I've had the wine three times over the past month and I like it more each time, as I get to know it.
INHERIT THE SHEEP Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2006, $60/bottle
Clay and Tersilla Gregory bought their 2+ acre property in Coombsville (between Caldwell and Faust Vineyards) in 2000. They agreed to keep and care for the seller's sheep. They're animal lovers, but sheep-care was beyond their skill-set. Seems to be going well. The sheep are still with them! A+ job in planting their vineyard. Tight vine spacing, organic farming, the best rootstock for their rocky vineyard...all the right stuff. They have a "if I told you I'd have to kill you" winemaker. Let me just report that this dude knows what he's doing. The Gregorys are deeply involved in The Slow Food Movement. So much so, they donate 5% of Inherit The Sheep proceeds to Slow Food. Clay was one of our guests at last Friday's "Back Room Blow Out XXXVIII," are slightly-famous walk-around tasting the we host five times a year. Using the "best endorsement is customer satisfaction," our guests loved the wine and their chat with Clay. Guests bought it too...Clay was back bright and early Saturday morning to deliver more! My notes are below. Enjoy. And thanks! Dan
INHERIT THE SHEEP Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006 $60/bottle 100% from the Gregory's "Home Vineyard" in Coombsville, about 1 mile east of Napa City. 5% Cab Franc, about ¾ new French oak. As a style comparison, think Dominus and Heitz "Martha's" as, like these Napa bastions, Inherit The Sheep captures the richness of Napa with a definitive taste of "somewhereness" as wine writer Matt Kramer likes to say. That somewhereness, in this case, is the earthy, smoky, musky component, in balance with lovely rich fruit, that I want in a truly exceptional Cabernet. When Clay Gregory poured the wine at last Friday's Blow Out, he poured it through a Vinturi then double-decanted it. Great idea-the wine blossomed, as if it had been decanted for an hour. Aroma of rich dark berries/cherries, tobacco, soil, Moroccan spice, oak & bittersweet chocolate. Taste dark, brooding berry fruits, pomegranate, more of the spice and chocolate, black truffles. Good acidity, common to Coombsville Cabernet, lifts the wine's aromas and flavors. Very chewy just-opened, then rich, expansive and balanced with ample air. Food matches: gamey red meats, like leg of lamb and venison. For some reason, Chinese pork spare ribs come to mind as a delicious, unique food and wine pairing. This is a exceptional and rare Cabernet you'll see at very few wine shops. Back Room Wines is very pleased to have it here for you.
