Greetings!
Beautiful days line up, one after the other, in Napa Valley. 80 something degrees and loads of sunshine make the vines very happy. Vintners are anxiously awaiting veraison, when the red wine grapes turn from green to red. Before you know it, vintage 2010 will be underway. It's a great time of year. The next few weeks will be as normal as summertime weeks can be. Back to school is a month out, and Labor Day is just a little dot of light at the end of the tunnel. Good time to suggest a first-release, tiny-production, Napa Valley "Mountain" Cab, don't you think? You may know it, as Back Room has recommended and sold the Mueller Family Cabernet since January. All reports back have been excellent. If you haven't had it yet, please consider.
Don't forget about BACK ROOM'S NEWSLETTER ARCHIVE. Forgot the name of that red blend or Sauvignon Blanc I recommended, and you can't find that email? Here's Back Room's Email Archive You'll find emails dating back to January 2009. Boy, these emails sure stack up.
Our tasting events this week are worthy of back-to-back visits to the wine bar. Tonight's Syrah tasting includes the HUNDRED ACRE "Ancient Way" Shiraz, a $250 bottle of wine. It's just one of the Syrahs in our five wine line up, and it's just $15 to try them all. Tomorrow night we pour Alternative Whites, and it's just $10. See you here.
A friend just launched a website called "Better. Cheaper. Slower." He offers advice on how to enjoy life a little bit more while keeping it simple, and economical. Check it out, right after today's MONEY WINE.
I see trees of green. Red roses too. I see them bloom. For me and for you. Dan

Money Wine July 15, 2010
Money Wine: a wine that anyone who loves good, rich, utterly delicious wine will enjoy A LOT, and is an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE. TODAY A tiny-production, first-release, Diamond Mountain Cabernet that has won fans throughout 2010. Are you its next fan?
MUELLER FAMILY Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain, Napa Valley 2007 $48/bottle Frank and Angie Mueller bought their Diamond Mountain property in 1991. It's a beautiful spot to grow Cabernet, but work (Frank is Calistoga's town doctor, Angie works at the Napa hospital), family and finances kept them from planting until 2004. 2007 is their first vintage. What a way to start! Only 1.1 acres of vines produced a mere 168 cases. I tasted it last winter and liked it a lot. The Muellers poured it at one of our tastings in January and it was even better. We opened a bottle to pour at the wine bar this week, and I'm thrilled to say that it's getting better and better. If you're in the area, come by today or tomorrow and we'll pour you a taste. It's a provocative nose of smoky/toast oak, French roast coffee, deep black cherry and bittersweet chocolate. The fruit takes the lead in the mouth: boysenberries and blackberries. Mocha and five spice too. Medium-full bodied, lots of fine tannins (not drying tannins though) layered and quite spicy, the Mueller Family Cabernet is no-doubt a "Mountain Cab." It'll continue to develop and get better, and better still. Best drinking I estimate will be from summer 2011 through 2014.
