SALVESTRIN "Retaggio"
This Italian-Inspired Napa Red Blend is today's
Money Wine

June 23, 2010
Greetings!
Welcome to Back Room Blends, where every wine in the shop has at least three grapes in it. Facetious? Yes. But there's something about GOOD red blends that grabs us. Is it the price?
The flavor? The "uniqueness?" Yes on all accounts, usually. Today, I have for you a
Napa "Super Tuscan," if you will, and a story to go with it. Please scroll one to six inches down, depending on the size of your screen, for the skinny.

We're now just a week and a half from our biggest event of
the year, Hot
We welcome
Don the Dancing Hot Dog on July 3. No cover charge.

Hot Dogs
Dogs & Wine.
I have a great team to put it all together: Chef Kevin Simonson, three local and artisan wineries pouring their good stuff, marketing wiz and wonderful wife
Holly Krassner, and last but not least the volunteers from Hospice of Napa Valley, the beneficiary of this charitable event.
Do you know about Hot Dogs & Wine? It's next Saturday, July 3, noon to 5 at the Opera House Plaza, next to Back Room Wines. Gourmet dogs served three ways: Classic, Chili and Kraut. Choose your dog then get a glass of wine, poured by the winemaker, to match. Live music, face painting for the kids and lots of fun make it a great way to spend your Saturday afternoon.
More about Hot Dogs & Wine is here.

SALVESTRIN "RETAGGIO"
Napa Valley Red Blend 2006
Salvestrin Retaggio$28/bottle
I love it when I impress myself with a wine that I'm already selling. That's what happened last Saturday, when I opened a bottle of Salvestrin "Retaggio" for a small group at our wine bar.

Friend and fellow Napa foodie Julie Logue Riordan ( Check out "Cooking With Julie." Fun way to spend part of your next Napa Valley visit) brought in 8 of her students for a wine tasting to pair with the lunch they were making.
The dish: Pasta with tomatoes, basil & goat cheese AND Farmers Market vegetables, grilled Spanish style with Picada. I wanted to pour a Napa Valley red for them. Something with fresh fruit, some acidity, not too much oak and a little spice. Retaggio had arrived two days earlier. "That'll work," I said to no one in particular.

"Retaggio" is a blend of 45% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah.
It's from Salvestrin Winery's Estate vineyard (organic, by the way) just south of St. Helena, on Highway 29 (mark Salvestrin down as a good place to stop...such good tips today for your next Napa visit!).
Retaggio is Italian for "Legacy," in honor of the family who came from Italy in the 1920s and laid their roots on this prime piece of land.
The wine has a rich and bright cherry and black pepper spicy nose, a kiss of sweet oak, a smidge of dried Mediterranean herb "nuance," a velvety mouth feel and a smooth, Merlot-like finish. Very good wine!

In the spirit that my best recommendations come from customers' A+ experiences, Salvestrin Retaggio is a sure thing.
The wine smelled and tasted great, cork-just-pulled. It tasted even richer, smoother and more persistent than when I first tasted it, a month before. Julie's tasting group loved it, too (especially with the Italian sheep's milk cheese Julie brought in to share). I sold a half case to the group, just like that.

Retaggio will drink great during summertime BBQ and fresh tomato season. It will transition seamlessly into fall squash, bean and root vegi dishes. Then stews and braises in the winter. Can't beat the price, either. As low as $25/bottle (with case discount). Step right up!
