JOSEPH KENT "Gris-Gris"
100 cases made of this Napa Red Blend

June 16, 2010
Greetings!
Not all are so fortunate to have friends with the expertise, insight and willingness to share their winegrowing knowledge as I am.
Chris Howell, Winemaker and G.M. of Cain Vineyards & Winery (and guest pourer
at Hot Dogs & Wine on Saturday July 3), shared his perspective on the slow, cool growing season so far. All interested in the insight of someone who has grown great grapes and made fine wine for many years should read Chris's email to me,
posted here.

JOSEPH KENT

Joseph Kent Gris Gris 2007

"Gris-Gris"
Red Blend
Napa Valley 2007
$45/bottle

Kent Jarman came to Napa Valley from Louisiana not that long ago with a love for wine. A degree from U.C. Davis Viticulture & Enology then five years at Duckhorn Winery gave him his foundation. Now an established, inspired winemaker, Kent makes the wines for Kenefick Ranch, Sinatra Family, Napa Station and his own winery, Joseph Kent. What's with the name, you ask? His full name is Joseph Kent Jarman. Why he goes by his middle name...good question.
I'll ask.

"Gris-Gris" is a blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot,
25% Cabernet Franc and 12% Petit Verdot.
Sources are Calistoga's "Kenefick Ranch," that Kent knows so well, and Pritchard Hill, just east and high above the Valley floor.

Ten seconds into tasting this wine, I knew I'd bring it in the shop, and bring it in IMMEDIATELY.
"I made just 100 cases, and have five left," Kent said. "I'll take them," I replied.
Smell and taste black currants, chocolate covered cherries, licorice, black pepper and a bunch of spices, leading with cinnamon and allspice.
It's not a flabby wine, but one with good acidity and structure. The texture, both chewy and silky, seals the deal for me. It expands in the mouth like an inflating balloon...another sign of a "serious" wine.
There's a plethora of wine not nearly as good selling for $60-$70/bottle out there. Not at BRW of course, but other places.

Name explanation - Gris Gris is a term in Voodoo
that represents a collection (a blend) of personal items that help bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Can this red blend bring good luck and shun the bad? Don't you want to find out?

WINOPHILIA
I just emailed Stephen Tanzer, owner of and wine critic extraordinaire for
The International Wine Cellar (IWC) about something. Prompted him to ask me to tell you about his new, FREE website, WINOPHILIA.COM.

Here's his note:

"Good to hear from you, Dan. I recently launched a free on-line wine e-zine aimed at a much broader audience of winos than the IWC.  I'd very much appreciate it if you could alert your clients to the existence of the site. Hopefully they will check it out.  It's intentionally user-friendly and uncluttered, and so far the feedback has been very positive.
Best from NYC, Steve"

I've spent only five minutes on it so far...looks really good. Informative, easy to follow, loads of good wine advice, well written. Done by real professionals who can make this oft-times confusing topic fun without dumbing it down. Check out Winophilia.com!
