Greetings!
For cryin' out loud, I have two perfect white "Money Wines" ready for you, but the clouds, cold, rain, thunder & hail keeps the WHITE WINE MOJO at bay. Next week, hopefully, the weather will clear up and warm up. The Napa Valley Wine Auction is next week and could use a visit from Mr. Sunshine. And Rosé wine sales have stalled. Just not fair... I asked winemaker Mark Herold, "when does the cool, inclement weather become a concern in getting the grapes ripe in the fall?" He says there's time for the vines to catch up in their cycle so not to worry there. However, the growing season as a whole is going to be a cool one. Add to the fact that it's a heavy set (i.e. the vines have more grapes on them than usual), and that can lead to underripe grapes, making light, herbaceous wines. Lotta time to go, but the early 2010 forecast is "mixed bag." I feel a bit like Mel Kuiper, the NFL Draft prognosticator. Back to today's Money Wines. Two Cabs. One from Napa, one from Sonoma. Both are 2007s, $30ish a bottle and really good. More below. Ask me what the white Money Wines will be next week (rain or shine) and I'll gladly send you the preview.
TASTING EVENTS We're salivating in anticipation of TONIGHT's "Three Memorable Wines" tasting. Why the excitement? ZIND HUMBRECHT Riesling "Clos Windsbuhl" 2007 ($75). And two '08 Pinot Noirs from Radio Coteau: "Alberigi" and "La Neblina." That's tonight, Thursday May 27, 5 to 8, come anytime. $15/tasting. Here's tonight's tasting sheet.
Tomorrow night, May 28: FAVORITE BARBECUE REDS. Six wines, with the U.S., France, Italy, Spain & Argentina represented. Tasting notes include our favorite BBQ to have with each. Will the Baby Back Rib fairy pay us a visit tomorrow night? Not getting my hopes up. Here's Back Room's Favorite Barbecue Reds tasting sheet.
SAVE THE DATE: Hot Dogs & Wine, Saturday July 3, Noon to 5 More than a lunch, more than a tasting. It's an event. Details here. Worth making a special trip to Napa.
Yours in Cornichons, Dan

Money Wines May 27, 2010
Money Wine: a wine that anyone who loves good, rich, utterly delicious wine will enjoy A LOT, and is an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE. TODAY Two very good, very good value, and very different 2007 vintage Cabs. Their names say it all.
"BABY BLUE" Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2007 $31/bottle Blue Rock owner Kenny Kahn's first "Baby Blue" was the 2006. It's all Estate Cab from his property just west of Highway 101, outside Geyserville. Younger vines than his flagship Cab: 5-10
years old. The 2006 was a hit at Back Room Wines. I tasted the 2007 last week, and it's even better. I like it when that happens! The tasty, perfumey "Baby Blue" could be labeled
"elegant." In comparison to the next wine, it definitely is. There's a deft touch of oak on the nose with fresh blueberries and pomegranate.
The taste is full of wild berries & cherries, pie spices, brulee
topping and lavender. Its supple (soft) tannins support its delicious, fruity, spicy, slight exotic flavors. Buy Baby Blue Cabernet Sauvignon here.
FISTICUFFS "The still undefeated champion!" | Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2007 $29/bottle Just like "Baby Blue," the 2006 Fisticuffs Cabernet was a star for us. One more time: the 2007 Fisticuffs is even better. It's sourced from exceptional vineyards in St.
Helena & Oakville. 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec add spice. Boasts sweet,
sexy oak on the nose with dark cherries, mocha and woodsmoke. Rich,
robust mouthfeel with plenty of tannins (fightin' tannins?), bittersweet chocolate,
mulberry and cassis flavors. This is a wonderful price for a big, chewy, in-your-face Napa
Cabernet. We'll sell it you as long as we can keep it around. Buy Fisticuffs Cabernet Sauvignon here.
Baby Cab/Fighting Cab Mixed Case 6 bottles of each wine above $324 (includes 10% case discount)
Baby Cab/Fighting Cab Half Case 3 bottles of each $170 (5% discount)

"VINO NACHO"
| The lastest "Honey What Am I Drinking," the bi-weekly column Holly & I write for the Napa Valley Register, tells the story of our journey to Napa's Taqueria Maria with three friends and five bottles of Back Room Wine. Best matches with the exceptional Super Nachos and other oft-ordered dishes? We had our favorites, including the off-dry white wine "Evolution" by Oregon's Sokol Blosser Winery. Read "Vino Nacho" here.
