SCULLY & STELLAREESE
Cabernet Sauvignons

Two brand new, first-release Napa Cabernets

April 21, 2010
Greetings!
I hear the lift in the voices of my east coast customers this week. IT'S SPRING! Let the angels sing and the flowers blossom. Holy canoly, in no time you'll hear wine merchants (like me) suggest you drink Ros!  Come to think of it, our annual Ros wine tasting is just two weeks from Friday, on May 7. Get ready for pink.

Springtime also means that it's ideal shipping time. How about some wine goodies for the summer? Goodies we got. Lots of them. I've never been happier with the assortment of wine styles, regions and price ranges in the store right now. If you need help deciphering what are the right wines for you, I can assist. I do it all the time. For starters, I present two Money Winesthis week.
SCULLY and STELLAREESE: two OUTSTANDING Napa Cabernets you probably never heard of.
Either one can be yours for just over $30/bottle (with case discount). Try them both for and enjoy the variety. Vive la diffrence.

Do you know about www.backroomwines.com's New Wines New Wines In The ShopIn The Shop page? The website's home page has this button
displayed front & center. This button leads you to a list of the latest wines to come through these doors, and includes price, date received and a link to my tasting notes. (Go ahead, click it. You know you want to.) It's broken into four categories so be sure to scroll through the whole page. If you are one (of the many) who ask me to "let you know when good new wines arrive," this page is for you! It's bookmark-worthy.

Tasting schedule. Come in
tomorrow night for an excellent wine lesson.
Old World vs New World wines. We'll have three pairs of wines for you. Two Sauv Blancs,
two Pinot Noirs, two Syrahs. In each pair, one wine is a classic Old World wine (our three will all be French) and the other is New World (California wines all). See if you can taste the difference that place makes.
The wines, and more details, are here.

This Friday is the latest rendition of "Taste Tour of Italy." Seven wines, all very different in taste from each other, for you to drink and learn. If you just want to enjoy, and not learn, that's fine by us. We just like it when you come! Here's the Italy line-up for this Friday.

That's it for the moment. If you'll excuse me, I must go plant Kohlrabi. No joke. Last week I wasn't sure what Kohlrabi was. Now I know it tastes like broccoli and is very good for you. I'm in!

SCULLY Cabernet Sauvignon
Mount Veeder, Napa Valley 2006
$36/bottle
I was blind-tasted on this
Scully Cabernet Sauvignonwine last week. What did I think it was? Definitely Cabernet Sauvignon, and was pretty sure it was Napa Valley. I liked it a lot, and was instantly interested in buying it for the shop. That's before I know the details, including the price.
Scully Ranch lies on Mount Veeder, high above Napa. Talented people have made this wine, from vine to bottle. Dave Abreu farms the vineyard, and Helen Keplinger is their winemaker. This broad-shouldered, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon oasts excellent concentration.
It's so concentrated, in fact, that I was surprised to learn that of the 8 barrels made (8 barrels equals about 200 cases), 7 of them were brand new French oak! Fruit, soil and oak play nice together, making the end result greater than the sum of the parts.
Smell and taste black fruits (berries, cherries & currants OH MY), mocha, licorice and truffle.  Has the nice "chewy" tannins that Cab lovers tend to like. Not drying, but substantial. Scully Cabernet Sauvignon is drinking nicely in a Big Cab kinda way.

STELLAREESE Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2007 $34/bottle
Stellareese Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
This is your smooooooth Cab. First release from Rachel and Geoff Davies.
Rachel spent many years working at T-Vine Cellars, doing a little bit of everything, including selling T-Vine wines to me. This was made at T-Vine under the guidance of Greg Brown and assistant winemaker Fernando Candelario (Fernando has Voces wines-maybe you've bought Voces from me). The fruit is from an organic Calistoga vineyard, and was purchased by Chateau Montelena in years past. 300 cases made.
I would have guessed this was a Bordeaux style red blend if tasted blind. The nose is very fruity and friendly with rose petals, talc, sweet berries/cherries and light oak. Makes me think Cab Franc. The taste is sweet, soft berry and cherry fruit with a little mineral and cocoa adding layers of flavor. This, and it's subtle oak and soft mouthfeel makes me think there could be some Merlot in here. Now, as it breathes and blossoms, the wine gets richer, fruitier and stronger. This makes me think Cabernet Sauvignon, and I'm right!
