BEDROCK SYRAH
Spicy Sonoma Red to cure the tax week blues

April 14, 2010
Greetings!
Feels like ages ago, but since my last email Holly & I saw Elvis Costello perform solo at Napa Valley Opera House (just around the corner).
What a show. Just Elvis and I think five guitars (all but one acoustic).
His voice is better than it's ever been and he seems healthy and happy.
Elvis, like every artist I've seen perform at the Opera House, commented what a great and intimate venue it is. We're lucky to have it.
Allimant Laugner Brut Rose

We hosted a pre-concert tasting to benefit the Opera House. Pinots were on the menu, and we raised about a hundred bucks for the Opera House. Considering it was a 2 hour event, not bad.
Funny how the ALLIMANT LAUGNER Brut Rosé Sparklingfrom Alsace seems to disappear twice as fast as the rest of the wines. We finished off a magnum of it no sweat. Could it be that it's my evening elixir of choice?

Now, I don't take my newsletter readers to be procrastinators, so the "cure the tax week blues" theme is more symbolic than reality. That said, it is a week where it feels right to take it easy on the pocketbook. But knowing your urge for the REALLY GOOD STUFF is stronger than ever, I have something tasty, special and under-valued for you this week. Granted, that's my mantra every email, but I think this week I've taken the Money Wineto another level. That is, if you like rich, spicy California Syrah.

We're trying something new this week for Thursday & Friday tastings. The theme, and the wines, stay the same. Oregon wines are on the menu. Ponzi Pinot Gris, Domaine Serene Chardonnay, Antica Terra Pinot Noir and more (6 wines in all). Here's the full Oregon tasting line-up.

A customer asked me the other day when the next sing-me-the-song contest would be. Yes, it's about that time. Keep an eye out for next week's email. And warm up those vocal chords.

Here's a warm-up...know what song this is from? Go Toora Loora Toora Loo Rye Aye

Money Wine

Money Wine: a wine that anyone who loves good, rich, utterly delicious wine will enjoy A LOT, and is an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE. During Tax Week, everyone feels like drinking a delicious "Money Wine."

BEDROCK WINE CO. SYRAHBedrock Wine Co Syrah
Sonoma County 2008  $19/bottle
I'm always looking for the perfect "grab line" when I write my wine
descriptions. Totally independent of this email feature, for BEDROCK Syrah I came up with:
"Care for a $30+ Syrah for under $20?
Who wouldn't
?
"

Makings of an outstanding Money Wine, if you ask me.

BEDROCK is the creation of Morgan Peterson,a passionate young man of 29 years and son of Ravenswood founder Joel Peterson.
All Bedrock wines are very small production (this Syrah is 250 cases) and made with lots of love, talent and respect for the grape, place and culture of wine. Know what? They are also BIG, extracted, powerful wines that appeal to lovers of the modern California winemaking style.
I've quickly become a fan of Morgan Peterson & Bedrock wines.

Morgan knows this wine is worthy of a $35 price tag. He also knows that Syrah is a "tough sell" at $35, and wants to make it easy for wine lovers to choose his wine from the almost-infinite selection out there. Whether he's making money on it, or not, is his business.
You get to enjoy, and thank me for introducing you to it.

Fruit sources: "Bald Mountain" on the Sonoma side of Mt. Veeder and "Lauterbach Hill" in Russian River make the majority. Wine geeks will like to know that it's about 80% whole cluster fermented (adds peppery spicy and tannins) and aged in French oak, about 20% new.

WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah is very dark and rich.

The fruits: blackberries, currants, blueberries, bordering jammy and liqueur in ripeness. The non-fruits: black pepper, soy sauce, oil cured olives. Has good, healthy acidity, but would not call it tangy. Syrah lovers will enjoy its nod to Northern Rhone in style, but thankfully for sales' sake it does not fall into the "acquired taste" zone.
For comparison, did you ever buy the Green & Red "Tip Top" Syrah or Tallulah "Shake Ridge" Syrah from me?If you did, and you really liked it, then this is about as close to a sure thing as there is. Buy some.
