Back Room Blow Out XXXV
this Friday night

Recommendations of Blow Out wines below,
just in case you can't make it.

January 26, 2010
Greetings!
I declare January the counter-intuitive month. Those that assume business is as gray and dreary as the Napa weather lately (10 straight days of rain now?) just need to dig a little deeper to feel the pulse of optimism and good business. Not just here. All around. Good restaurants are doing a booming business, wines that deserve your attention are getting it, and our crying skies are re-invigorating the land and filling our resevoirs. My romantic nature today may come from the heap of Chanterelle mushrooms my friend David gave me today. They've been transformed into four freezer-packs of Duxelles, ready for future quick & tasty meals. Yeah, winter is great, and I'm not even watching the football games.

336 thank-yous to each who completed last week's customer survey.
That's 1/8th of my email list: an impressive % of response. Good information to take deeper into 2010. I'll share with you what I've learned when I announce the four gift certificate winners next month.

It's a Blow Out week. Back Room Blow Out XXXV, the walk-around tasting where you vist and taste with the winery owners and winemakers + one importer. It's our signature event.  We're two years away from catching up with the Super Bowl (they're playing #44, XLIV, in two weeks. Could you have written 44 in Roman numerals without checking? I had to check.)
We have an outstanding line-up, and a particularly good variety of wines for you to enjoy. The list is below. Your non-attendance will require a note from your doctor.

We go to Espaņa for this week's MONEY WINE. Artadi Rioja: It's GOOD!  Check 'er out.

Money Wine
for January 26, 2010

Money Wine: a wine that anyone who loves good, rich wine will enjoy A LOT, and is an EXCEPTIONAL VALUE.

ARTADI Rioja "Viņas de Gain" 2006, $25/bottleArtadi Rioja Vinas de Gain

This is delicious, spicy, perfumed, robust Rioja.
It's 100% Tempranillo from "Vines of Height" (Viņas De Gain), grown over 3000 feet above sea level. That's high for world-class winemaking. Aged in French oak for a year (most Rioja is aged in American oak). Nose is sweet berries, tobacco, cocoa, herbs and black pepper. Intense fruit, perfectly ripe and juicy, with earthy spice and dried herbs & flowers in the mouth.
It's drinking great right now and I recommend it with no reservations. Will make you appreciate good Rioja (if you need the help).
Finally, I'm happy to see that $25 is almost the best price for Artadi Viņas de Gain 2006 in the country. And that's before the 10% case discount, should you be so inclined. Nice!

Can't make it? Letting a couple thousand miles keep you away?
Experience the Blow Out one wine at a time in the comfort of your own home. I'll include the Ken Bernards and Mike Drashe action figures on a case purchase. Here are my Cliff notes on four of the eight wines we'll pour at Back Room Blow Out XXXV:
  • Ancien Winery
(Ken Ancien Pinot GrisBernards, Co-Owner/Winemaker) the ANCIEN Pinot Gris "Sangiacomo" 2008 ($21) is the bomb. Rich and juicy a la Alsace Pinot Gris with a pure, dry finish.

  • LARKMEAD CELLARS "Firebelle" 2006 ($50) is a Bordeaux- style red blend with a unique, distinctive taste. My notes read, "aged prime beef, cinnamon, black truffles and dark chocolate marry with rich red & black fruits and fine, ample tannins."

  • Tallulah Winery (Mike Drashe, Owner/Winemaker).
TALLULAH "Les Trois Voix" 2006 ($19) is a Rhone-Style red wine from Amador's "Shake Ridge Ranch." We've been pouring at our wine bar for over a month to glowing reviews. It's just over half Grenache then Syrah and Mourvedre
(A "GSM" if you will). Dark, lush, spicy and very easy to like.

  • FARM WINE IMPORTS. Francois Pinon VouvrayOwner Keven Clancy started Farm Imports last year after many years of working for someone else. We carry quite a few of his selections, including the tingly, tasty FRANCOIS PINON Vouvray "Cuvée Tradition" 2007 ($21), which we'll taste this Friday night. It's great fun to introduce wine-lovers to outstanding Chenin Blanc like this one. Tastes of peaches & grapefruits with a big smack of acidity and chalky earth.
All these wines are available for purchase at www.backroomwines.

Taking this Thursday night off

This Thursday's White Burgundy tasting has been moved to Thursday, March 11.
This is a good week to take a break, and I want to check out Oxbow Wine Merchant's Sierra Nevada Beer & Cheese pairing this Thursday night.
Five beers and five artisan cheeses to match. Man was not made on wine alone...

Drink more Falanghina.
