Christmas Eve Social
This Thursday, Christmas Eve, anytime from 2 to 5

December 21, 2009
Greetings!
And the decade winds down. Where were you December 31, 1999? I lived in Yountville, worked in the wine department at Dean & Deluca, and was curious where I would be in ten more years.
Happy Holidays to you.
Hope your season is how you want it to be. Mine's pretty good. Good business, good friends and good wine to drink. Good music, too, as I'm enjoying Pandora's holiday music (right now, it's a Willie Nelson Holiday station. Took me a while to jump in, but now that I have, I can say that PANDORA has changed my life. For the better.
This email is going to readers in Northern California only. It's about our Christmas Eve event. The tag line was "Good Wine Will Be Drunk, No Charge" until a nice young man from a certain government agency called to remind me that giving away free alcohol is not legal. The complying tag line now is "Good Wine Will Be Drunk, Modest Charge." Not a grabber, but keeps our hands clean.
With the eyes of my local customers shining on this email, I put the spotlight on three new, exceptional import wines. They're just a couple of mouse-scrolls down.
Merry/Happy fill-in-the-blank. Whatever your blank is, make it a good one!

YOU'RE INVITED!
Three outstanding imports
Come in, buy & try. You won't be sorry!

GINI Soave Gini Soave Classico
Classico 2008 $19
In a wine culture that focuses upon statement wines, it's a pleasure to suggest the pleasing yet rather unassuming Gini Soave Classico from the Veneto, Northeast Italy. It's a scrumptious white wine for anytime...cold weather, warm weather, with food or without. There's "just OK" Soave, then there's Soave CLASSICO, a couple cuts above. The Gini is loaded with nectarine, peach and green apple flavors. Very aromatic, a soft mouthfeel and just a joy to drink.
The grape, by the way, is Garganega - 100%.

LES HERITIERS DU COMTE LAFON
Mâcon-Chardonnay
"Clos de la Crochette" 2008 $38 Net
Comte Lafon, producers of rare and
Lafon Macon Crochetteexpensive Montrachet & Meursault, has grown (byodynamically) & made wines from the Macon for a few years now. We're lucky to get a little, and suggest you try some of the ONE CASE of this wine we got last week. The "Clos de la Crochette" and its surrounding vineyards date back to the 10th century...perhaps the world's oldest site for growing Chardonnay. Seriously, this wine makes a case for Chardonnay maintaining its perch as the King of White Grapes. Richness, intensity and delicacy are all rolled into one in this very fairly priced wine. Apples, citrus, spice, chalky soil, sweet butter, long finish. Good now & best in 2011. If this was, I don't know, April, I might limit purchases on this. In the spirit of year-end inventory reduction, however, it's first-come-first served.

DOMAINE CHARVIN  Côtes-du-Rhône
"Le Poutet" 2007  $23

One great white wine producer deserves a partner in red, don't you think? Domaine Charvin, one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's finest, makes a super-delicious Cotes-du-Rhone and it's here in the store, albeit briefly. The 2007 Chateaueneuf came & went in a New York minute, and I'm guessing "Le Poutet" won't last much longer. Mostly Grenache, with a smidge of Syrah and all tank-aged, this wine is lip-smackin' good. It's ripe and spicy, but not TOO ripe & spicy. Smell & taste cinnamon, clove, licorice and cracked black pepper along with ripe berries on the vine in August.
Full bodied, supple tannins and in Robert Parker-vernacular, hedonistic. America meets France in this "showy" Rhone.

See you next decade!
Whenever I freak out (just a little) about how the years tick by, I just remember that everyone is on the same carnival ride. Time waits for no one. Hey, what do you say we take down another decade? I'll be in touch next year.
