Back Room's Last Call
8 more shipping days before Christmas

December 15, 2009
Greetings!
Writing this newsletter with the mental equivalent of one arm tied behind my back. Hopefully this extended case of "the crud" will move on by mid-week. Need my energy to attend to your wine needs, so close to Christmas, as well as to my dear Holly. She is one day removed from major gum surgery...simple Mac & Cheese is on the menu this evening. Adversity, however, must step aside. I must stake my claim to be your waning-days gift resource. How so? For starters, refer to last week's email for gift certificate, wine club and easy gift giving ideas. Here's that email. If you prefer to buy bottles of wine, which is likely the case since you're reading this, below are four that I've recently tasted, really liked, and recommend to all lovers of VERY GOOD, ARTISAN WINE.

TASTINGS THIS WEEK:
This Thursday December 17: Guess the Grape.

We'll pour you four wines blind (i.e. you don't know what it is). Guess what the grape is (multiple choice). All the best guessers (whether it's 4 out of 4 or 3 out of 4 we don't know yet) enter the drawing for a MAGNUM of PIERRE PETERS CHAMPAGNE ($115 value). It's just $5 to play, and come anytime from noon to 8 to try your tasting luck, or skill.
Drawing for the magnum will be after 8 PM on Thursday. Don't need to be present to win.

THIS FRIDAY, December 18 through
SATURDAY,
December 20 is our annual service of GLÜHWEIN.
The mulled, warm red wine of Germany & Austria, known by other names in other countries, is an eight year tradition for Back Room Wines. Come enjoy a glass a complementary and complimentary glass
(it's free, and we'll tell you how good you look) at Back Room Wines as you wrap up, if you will, your gift buying.

Cadillac, cadillac. Long & dark, shiny & black. Dan

Four wines to get you in the spirit
Check out the mixed case & half case suggestion below.

SELENE Sauvignon Blanc
"Hyde Vineyards" Selene Sauvignon BlancCarneros 2008  $31

For years, Selene has made one of the best California Sauv Blancs, and the beat goes on with this 2008. It's particularly grapefruit-y and zingy. New Zealand in style except no grass or herb. Pippin apples, kaffir lime, the grapefruit, Meyer lemon. Makes your mouth tingle and want more & more! Makes a great match with cracked crab, a Christmas Eve tradition for many. Buy Selene Sauvignon Blanc here.

L'ANGEVIN Chardonnay
Russian River Valley 2007 $40

Butter and cream are the first two flavors that come to mind in the L'Angevin. Then poached spicy pears and apple crisp. Lush mouthfeel and long butter/spice finish. All this with just enough acidity to keep it bright. 100% ML (that's the BUTTER), 50% new French oak, 760 cases made. I've been a fan of Robbie Meyer, the co-owner and winemaker for L'Angevin, for a few years now. He's got the touch. If you're a roast turkey or goose person on Christmas,  this gets my big recommendation. I'm curious: have you ever had goose?
Buy L'Angevin Chardonnay here.

VINEYARD 1869 Vineyard 1869 ZinfandelZinfandel "Old Vine"
Amador County 2006 $34

"Old Vine" is an understatement. These vines were planted in 1869.
Owner/Winemaker Scott Harvey uses "Grandpere Vineyard" in the Sierra Foothills (Gold Country) for this new label. Rhone-ish cracked black pepper, soy sauce, port-like fruit and truffle-laden earth. Rich, intense and plenty strong. This Zin speaks to us. For those of you who remember Scott Harvey's Renwood Zinfandels from the late 80s/early 90s...I'm reminded of those spectacular Zins with this. I'm really excited to have this here.

ROCKLEDGE Cabernet Sauvignon
"The Rocks" Napa Valley 2005 $45

"THE ROCKS" Estate Vineyard Cab from St. Helena (east side of the Valley). Frankly, The Rocks ROCKS!  Nose of spicy oak, mole, mulberries and bittersweet chocolate. Rich, earthy, fruity, powerful flavor & texture.  Full-bodied, complex and drinking like a champ right now. 500 cases made.
