Beau Vigne Cab "Juliet"
Cabernet Sauvignon that gets us really excited

October 6, 2009
Greetings!
Four wines today. First, the big fella: Beau Vigne "Juliet" Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, a Cab that, at first sip, I knew would be...is...a Back Room All Star selection.
Second & third are our two featured winemakers at our Thurday night tasting: Jean Louis Chave & Didier Dagueneau. Five wines you don't taste every day in our Thursday flight. Limited space for this tasting. Details below.
Finally, my just-posted Food & Wine Blog gets silly with Caesar. Caesar Salad, that is. What wine to match? Wine number four in today's email is a yummy Sonoma Chardonnay that is the vinous Sonny to the gustatory Cher (like that?).

These eyes have seen a lot of loves but they're never gonna see another one like I had with you.
Can you guess who the artist is? It's the song on the radio right now. Dan.

Cabernet Sauvignon
"Juliet" Napa Valley 2007 $55/bottle (net)

A Napa wine-insider tip: the Beau Vigne "Juliet" Cabernet is so good, so delicious right now, betcha I'm a small voice extolling its virtues now, and larger voices will be giving similar glowing reviews in a very short time.
You may know Beau Vigne from either Back Room Wines or other good wine shops as they've made outstanding Cabernets before (many have asked me to compare this to the 2004 Juliet-the 2007 is even better). From the top of Atlas Peak comes the berry-licious fruit that makes Beau Vigne. "Juliet" is their second tier wine, and it's hard to believe it can get any better. Dave Phinney, of Orin Swift wines, is the winemaker, and his touch is on this wine in spades.
Nose of blueberry essence, mulberries, kiss of toasty oak, jam-packed with black berries & cherries. Huge fruit, richness, big tannins that give structure but let the fruit flavors shine now, oak that's already intregrated into the wine. There may have been magic used to make this wine...it's so good, and nicely priced considering. That's it...short & sweet. Try a couple, and try it soon, and you'll be back for more. I got enough to last through 2009, maybe.

Taste the wines of Didier Dagueneau &
Jean Louis Chave

This Thursday night at Back Room Wines.

Granted this sounds like a network TV commercial (an E.R. you do not want to miss), this Thursday's tasting is really exciting. Dagueneau Pouilly Fume Silex
Didier Dagueneau, the dynamic winemaker from Pouilly-sur-Loire who lost his life a year ago, makes the best Sauvignon Blanc wines in the world. We pour two of his 2007s, the last vintage he made. Blanc Fume de Pouilly & "Silex," his greatest wine. Plus, the Dagueneau Jurancon "Les Jardins de Babylon" 2006, a spectacular white dessert wine.

That's not enough! |
Also in tonight's tasting:
Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, 2006 vintage, red & white.
While 2007 is the vintage of a lifetime in the Southern Rhone,
2006 is likely the vintage of the decade in the Northern Rhone.
Here's a little Robert Parker love for these wines:
Red: "the 2006 Hermitage reminds me of Chave's brilliant 1991...seamless, gorgeously-proportioned, large-framed wine represents the definition of finesse, elegance, and terroir."
White: "remarkably powerful...demonstrates the heights white wine varietals reached in the northern Rhone in 2006. Its sumptuous nose reminds me of a liqueur of white flowers intermixed with notions of truffles, white peaches, honeysuckle, marmalade, and crushed rocks."

This Thursday's Dagueneau/Chave tasting is $75. As only one bottle of each wine will be poured, we suggest you purchase your tasting ahead of time to insure your spot. Come by the store to purchase, call us, or
use this order form to purchase. Write "Dan" in the box asking for a merchant name and write "Taste Dagueneau Chave" in the message box.

Here's more information on the tasting.

Wine to pair with Caesar
Great feedback received on Enkidu Chardonnay
my new Food & Wine Blog.
I've inspired many of you on wine, so to do the same with food is a treat. Keeps me writing them!

New posting this week:
Caesar Salad and wines to match.
In my junior college days, cooking tableside at Eureka California's Red Lion Inn, I burned into my memory how to make Caesar Salad from scratch. Last Sunday I pulled out the ingredients and chopped, whisked and grated up a doozy of a dressing. I have three wine suggestions for a good Caesar, including a delicious Chardonnay from a Sonoma winery called Enkidu. One doesn't think of pairing wine with salad too often, so I'm glad to say that this match not only works...IT WORKS GREAT! Read the Caesar Salad entry in my Food & Wine Blog and learn why.

Drink more Saumur Champigny.
