Summer Picnic Wines
Indian Summer, that is

September 23, 2009
Greetings!
Why not a picnic theme as we welcome back the fall? Tailgate Back Room Bannerparties, harvest parties and the turning of the leaves are just three good reasons to eat & drink al fresco style until the frost is firmly on the pumpkin. The weather's downright balmy in Napa this week, so picnic style is normal for us these days & nights. It is good.

I have a fun set of three Indian Summer Picnic wines for you below: one white and two reds. The white wine comes with my latest Food & Wine Blog. The two reds are great for drinking both inside & out, with turkey sandwiches & Thanksgiving turkey. The perfect fit in the picnic theme comes from their big flavors and fair prices. So, if it just so happens your picnic glass is in fact a plastic cup, you won't be cheated & nor will the wine.

Thursday & Friday tastings are posted below, right hand column.
PINOT NOIR from six California AVAs is tomorrow (Thursday).
SOUTHERN FRANCE WINES, mostly Bandol & Languedoc is this Friday.
Read below, and follow the respective links for the wine line-ups.

Picnic Wines for
Indian Summer

ATREA "The Choir" Roussanne/Viognier
Mendocino County 2007
$19/bottleAtrea "The Choir" White Wine
Since last Christmas Eve, when we last enjoyed, Holly and I have dreamed of revisiting Lucky Pig. What is it? It's served at SolBar, the restaurant connected to Solage Resort in Calistoga, and it's a slow-roast duroc pork shoulder served with black sesame crepes and butter lettuce leaves along with oodles of groovy condiments like roast Mongolian peanuts, gingered pineapples, cilantro, and rice noodles to name a few. It's a hands-on taste delight that serves two (at $37, a good value, and unless you have two big appetites, you'll take some home with you).
We went to SolBar on a warm, late-summer day with a slight threat of sprinkles. The unusual dark clouds on a summer day made the afternoon even more memorable. Lucky Pig was as good as we remembered from last Christmas Eve. And, knowing the dish, I found the right wine to go with it, ATREA "The Choir" Roussanne/Viognier, Mendocino County 2007, $19/bottle. What a great pairing with comparable flavors in food & wine that all got along in the mouth. Honey/floral nose & gingered pineapple. Spicy nose & the cilantro & peanuts. "The Choir" is weighty enough to match the flavorful pork, so tender you don't need teeth. You gotta try it. But, if Lucky Pig is not in your future, make or buy the freshest spring rolls you can, and be sure to have all the aromatic fixins in & on them.

PALI Pinot Noir "Riviera" Pali Pinot Noir "Riviera"Sonoma Coast 2008 $21/bottle
I was happy as a pig in mud when this delicious, happy-drinking, young Pinot Noir came across my palate last week. The winery's in Santa Barbara makes delicious Pinots from designated California & Oregon AVAs. Kenneth Juhasz, Winemaker. "Riviera," named after the LA neighborhood, combines prime Sonoma Coast vineyards. It's delish and a fine value. Sweet, juicy cherries, great texture and richness, friendly & yummy.

OJAI Syrah Santa Barbara County 2006 $26
Here's my go-to wine for BBQ. Burgers, ribs, chicken with BBQ sauce...get thee to a tailgate!
Ojai's Santa Barbara Syrah is a blend of their outstanding single vineyard wines (Bien Nacido,  Thompson, White Hawk & more). A little Mourvedre & Grenache gives more spice, brightness & complexity. I'm a fan: forward, pure dark fruits, rich & very ripe, good acidity & black pepper spice, smoke and succulent fruit. Blue ribbon goes to Ojai's Adam Tolmach who, for 26 years, has made consistently delicious, exciting wines.

Today's Two Imports

FRANCOIS PINON Vouvray
"Cuvée Tradition" 2007  $21/bottle
Francois Pinon Vouvray
How's this for an endorsement: Holly & I were at the Oxbow Wine Merchant last Sunday for a bite. I went to their fridge to find a cold bottle to drink with our Beef Carpaccio & Fish Tacos (Surf & Turf!)
Even though I'd had it, and sell it, I just had to buy the FRANCOIS PINON Vouvray "Tradition" 2007. It's just so good, and perfect on that hot day with our Beef Carpaccio & Fish Tacos.
(Surf & Turf!).
It's a brilliant expression of Chenin Blanc: peaches & grapefruits with a big smack of acidity and chalky earth. Lip-smacking good with a big nose, full mouthfeel and long juicy/zesty finish. It's so good, one won't be enough...better pick up two.

GUNN ESTATE Pinot Noir
Central Otago, New Zealand 2008
  $17/bottleGunn Estate Pinot Noir
Central Otago, on New Zealands south island, is as far away from the equator as any fine winemaking region. It's high-risk, high reward territory for wine, especially for Pinot Noir, "The Heartbreak Grape."
Gravelly/sandy riverbed soils and cool climate make for fine, classic Pinot Noir here in Central Otago. Red cherries & plums, good acidity, rose and lavender, spice.
We found a real winner in this great value, spicy, fruity, distinctive New Zealand Pinot, and have plenty of it to share with you.

Back Room Wines Email readers mention this feature and receive 10% off these two wines through Sunday. Discount is good for both walk-in & mail order purchases.
'splain something too me Lucy
The other night I had two seemingly level-headed guests equate folks who know and study wine with "wine snobs." As in "I'm not a wine snob, I just know what I like" and "I don't know about French wines...I'm not a snob." Folks in the wine business are used to the label and it's second nature to dismiss it. What got me about the form of the comments above is that it suggests the actual work of being a wine professional, a student of the topic, basically being in the wine business, means you're a snob. The lapse of logic got to me. So what do I want Lucy to 'splain? I don't know. Just felt like sharing.

Drink more Gin & Tonics.
