A Killer Napa Cabernet
drinking at its prime right now

September 9, 2009
Greetings!
Yesterday I celebrated the 43rd anniversary of my world debut. With a healthy wine biz going (not to be confused with a wine buzz), I'm spreading my birthday enjoyment over a longer time span. It's a veritable double magnum of a birthday celebration this year. A one day stay-cation is on our calendar for next Sunday. Maybe a stop at Failla Winery, definitely lunch at SolBar (Lucky Pig!). Both these spots are part of the "Recommended Places To Visit" page, by the way, and here it is. Holly & I are looking forward to it.

But there's no greater pleasure for me than to bring you pleasure with yet another knock-your- socks-off Napa Cabernet. It's a real tiger by the tail: Meyer Vineyard 2005 Napa Cab.
I speak from experience as I enjoyed it with grilled rack of lamb at Chez Dan & Holly two weeks' ago. (Good restaurant, but it's such a pain to get a reservation there). The delicious story, culled from my  Food & Wine Blog, is below.

Napa Valley residents: plenty of good stuff for you in today's email. We have tasting events on both Thursday & Friday. "Chardonnay Zero to 100% ML" on Thursday. "Is It $15 or $50" tasting on Friday. Putting the finishing touches on the wine line-up and tasting sheets today, and I'm looking forward to both a lot. You'll have fun. Hope to see you at either or both tasting events! Also below, two delicious imported wines I drank recently, now carry, and suggest you check out. It's all below.

It's been a hard day's night. Dan

MEYER VINEYARD
Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2005  $48
Killer Napa Cab drinking at its prime right now!

Holly & I welcomed two long-time customers and friends into our home recently. The featured wine of the night was set (as you now know), so to match we marinated & grilled New Zealand rack of lamb. Grilled new potatoes, asparagus & radicchio (coated in balsamic & olive oil...ask me about the radicchio ice water bath) accompanied. The lamb was great. It's a simple marinade, especially if you grow rosemary in your yard. The recipe is including in my Food & Wine Blog. "Best rack of lamb I've ever had," our guest Kathy exclaimed not unlike Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally." She has good taste.

MEYER VINEYARD
Cabernet Sauvignon
Meyer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley 2005, $48/bottle

Meyer, the 2nd label for Hestan Vineyard, is made by Mark Herold. Regular Back Room email readers know of his golden touch with Cabernet. If you don't, the Meyer Vineyard makes for a delicious lesson. Spice, richness, depth of fruit, texture of cashmere, sense-enveloping.  You wanting a super-premium Napa Cabernet, with all the sweetness, spice and punch of flavor that makes Napa Cab famous? I've got other suggestions of course, but the Meyer is tough to beat.
Oh, how was the rack of lamb & Meyer Cabernet pairing you ask?
C'mon, what do you think? Slam dunk, baby.

Two Tasty Imports
Both recently arrived, and are worth coming in for a bottle or two (or three):

SERRERA Torrontes Mendoza, Argentina 2008  $14
Seekers, and lovers, of top notch Torrontes will adore this wine. Exotic, super-aromatic, floral nose. Loads of citrus and tropical fruits. Strong and deep. As Torrontes wines go, the Serrera is particularly rich and creamy. More lees-stirring gives extra texture and almost toasty flavors.

ARTADI Rioja
Back Room Banner
"Viñas de Gain"
2005 $25/bottle
Delicious & perfectly authentic Rioja for you. 100% Tempranillo, modestly oaked still with a delectable, earthy bottle bouquet. Nose is sweet berries, tobacco, cocoa, herbs and black pepper. Intense fruit, perfectly ripe and juicy, with earthy spice and dried herbs & flowers in the mouth. Will make you appreciate good Rioja (if you need the help).

Back Room Wines Email readers mention this feature and receive 10% off these two wines through Sunday. Discount is good for both walk-in & mail order purchases.

BIG TASTING WEEK
This Thursday, September 10, 5 to 8 P.M. is Back Room's inaugural Thursday night tasting.
The theme: CHARDONNAY ZERO TO 100% MALOLACTIC.
We'll pour you a flight of five Chardonnays ranging from zero to 100% "ML." Smell, taste & feel the difference. To make things even more interesting, the flight includes a 100% ML White Burgundy. Compare a typical, high end California 100% ML Chard to one from Burgundy. Explanation and helpful reading material included. $15/tasting.
Here's the Zero to 100% ML Chardonnay flight line-up.

This Friday, September 11, 5 to 8 P.M. we play our favorite wine game, "Is It $15? Or is it $50?"
Taste three pairs of wine blind.
i.e. we put the bottles in paper bags so you can't see what they are...blindfolds not supplied). In each pair, one of the wines costs about $15 and the other costs about $50.
Can you tell which is which?

We'll pour you a pair of Pinot Noirs,
Petite Sirahs & Chardonnays.
All are top-notch wines that are sold in the store. The prize for guessing right all three times? The satisfaction of knowing you have discriminating taste!  Or, the satisfaction of knowing you can drink well for cheap.
(err, I mean "drink at a value.")

Both Thursday & Friday tastings, are from 5 to 8 P.M. (but we're usually ready to pour around 3), reservations are not necessary.
Check out the Calendar of Tasting Events here.

Want to make some Napa wine?
Now you can. A few bucks (OK, a few few bucks), work out the transport and you can have a garage full of prime Napa grapes in a matter of days! The Napa Valley Grapegrowers has launched the Napa Winegrape Market. Search for the grapes you want and the region in Napa you want them from, and VOILA! a list of grapegrowers looking to sell is yours. Great information: vine age, spacing, clones, rootstock, trellising and a picture from Googlemaps too!
It's worth a look.

Drink more Rosé in the fall (Domaine du Dragon Rosé-tasty).
