Greetings!
This tour of the NEW www.backroomwines.com stops today at the Featured Wine Shelf.
Six of our most highly recommended wines decorate the upper right hand corner of the website. What makes a wine worthy of being on the wine shelf? Same parameters as any trustworthy Back Room Wines selection: it's really good, it's limited production, is a good value (regardless of price) and has GOT SOUL.
Please visit the websiteand check out the six featured wines (sorry, the image above is a jpeg, so doesn't have the flash features that it has on the website.)
The six wines currently on the shelf are all Napa Valley red wines, and they fall under five categories of Wine Recommendations: Wine Country Classics, Rising Wine Stars, Great Wine Deals, Dan's Picks (Favorites?) and Food & Wine Blog Selections. Check out each featured wine below...they're drinking mighty fine tonight! Keep an eye on the wine shelf as we keep it dynamic with new, delicious wines all the time.
What's wine got to do with it, got to do, got to do with it? Dan

The Featured Wines Shelf
Six wines guaranteed to please you... for five different reasons. We explain: PALOMA Merlot, Spring Mountain Napa Valley 2006 $58/bottle is our featured "Wine Country Classic" Hands-down one of the best Merlots made in California. From Spring
Mountain, high above the Valley floor. 15% Cab Sauv adds more body and
girth. Enjoy from now through 2015. Dense, dark and very rich. Taste
blackberry liqueur, dark chocolate, vanilla bean, tobacco, pomegranate.
Well endowed while maintaining the silkiness of Merlot. Here are all of our "Wine Country Classics" PRIEST RANCH Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006 $36/bottle is our "Rising Wine Star" From a hillside vineyard east of the Valley floor. This is the kinda
Cab we like to drink at BRW. It marries rich Napa ripeness with
Bordeaux-like tobacco, cocoa and earthy spice. Taste black cherry,
pomegranate, cedar, black olive, bittersweet chocolate, earth &
roasted meat. Powerful and intriguing. Decant & enjoy. Here are all our "Rising Wine Stars"
B. KOSUGE Pinot Noir "The Shop" Carneros 2007 $34/bottle is one of "Daniel Dawson's Picks" Could be our favorite VERY LOCAL Pinot Noir. "The Shop" is a working
vineyard shop in The Carneros, and this vineyard is its neighbor.
You'll love the rich, juicy, friendly, dark berry cherry fruit along
with the body, spice and sweet-soil notes in this wine. Heck, we just
plain LIKE IT!
JULES MELANGE Claret Napa Valley 2006 $28/bottle is another "Daniel Dawson's Picks" This wine continues to get glowing customer reviews. Tony of Los Gatos, CA wrote me, "This is an awesome wine and superb value. One of the best you have ever offered,
in my humble opinion." This is a rich and very smooth red blend of Cab Franc, Merlot and
Syrah. Smell & taste smoky oak, plum jam, cracked pepper, dark
raspberries, strawberry pie and violets. Wonderful concentration and
polish. 125 cases made. All of Daniel Dawson's current picks are here. GREEN & RED Zinfandel Chiles Canyon Vineyards, Napa Valley 2007 $23/bottle is in the current Food & Wine Blog. With Green & Red Zin in glass, I played with sweet, summer,
heirloom tomatoes. How to make this more unlikely match a pairing to
remember? To find the answer, I went for taste comparisons rather than
contrasts. The sweetness of the tomato and the wine are easy, and it
worked. The Zin's "sweetness" came out more. As for the spice, three
things: extra virgin olive oil, cracked black pepper and chopped fresh
basil. Pepper in the oil and black pepper matched that in the Zin
nicely. The minty-ish spice of the basil matched with the mint/licorice
note in the wine. Oh, one more thing: Balsamic Vinegar. Getting back to
match sweet with sweet again. And it did! Great match that you can do
at home. But be sure to get good, vine-ripened tomatoes. Here are more Food & Wine Blogs PARLAY "The Bookmaker" Red Wine, Napa Valley 2007 $17/bottle is our latest "Great Wine Deal" A classic, lush, seductive, right-atcha Napa red blend. Made by Ramian
Estate, this is 60% Cab Sauv, 40% Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.
Berry liqueur, pie spice, exceptional richness, good balancing acidity.
Ready to drink and fall in love with. 970 cases made. Check it out for yourself all of August. We're pouring Parlay EVERY DAY, ALL DAY in our Wine Flight. This way to all our current Great Wine Deals

Speaking of wine with tomatoes,
|
Next Friday, August 21, will be a particularly fun & unique Friday Night Tasting. "What do drink with all my beautiful summer tomatoes?" The Green & Red Zinfandel with the balsamic, basil, black pepper and evoo will be one pairing for sure. Also will do a super-crisp white, an aromatic Alsace white and a classic Chianti. Tomatoes & wine is the theme for my visit to the Bay Area TV Show "View From The Bay." I'll be on next Wednesday, August 19, somewhere between 3 and 4 P.M. (I bet I'll be near the end so the hosts can drink!) You can watch it live (here's the link), or find it in the View From The Bay archive afterward. Would you like to attend? For View From The Bay tickets, call the request line at (415) 954-7733 or fill out a ticket request form here.
Drink more wines with bicycles on the label.
