Greetings!
Been thinking, hoping and wishing it was truly Rosé season the last two months.
Finally, mid-May, it really is.
So smart of me to have scheduled Back Room Wines' annual Rosé tasting for this Friday.
Rose Wine Glass

BACK ROOM'S 7th ANNUAL ROSÉ TASTING
This Friday, May 15, from 5 to 8 P.M.

We'll have three French Rosé wines, two from California,
and finish with Brut Rosé Sparkling.

$10/tasting
Wines sold at 10% discount during the tasting.
Here's the tasting sheet.   See you here!

Fresh & tasty pink wines and warm weather get me thinking of fun, spicy, $20-something reds for outdoor cooking.
Below are four strong, fine-value reds I like to share with friends when there are briquettes involved.
Next time you stop into the shop, look for these (I assure you won't have to look too hard).
If you're a little far away to visit, no worries...Back Room Wines will ship them to you!

No need to ask he's a smooth operator,
Dan.

Four BBQ Reds
I rolled my Weber charcoal grill outside last Sunday. I made and grilled burgers. Used a tip from the latest Food & Wine: soak the raw patties in ice water for 30 seconds, then immediately place on the grill and baste with butter. The burgers were very good: moist, full-flavored, etc. Nice with ice? Better with butter? Having made the effort, I like to think so!
Here are four reds for such occasions. Today, I've gone to where my heart is (when it comes to wine):
Southern France.

CLOS DU CAILLOU
Côtes du Rhône
"Cuvée Unique-
Vieilles Vignes" 2007   $22/bottle
Clos du Caillou's Côtes du Rhône vineyard is surrounded by Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and it blows many CdPs away for richness and complexity. No lie! 80% Grenache, 13% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre. Kirsch, chocolate, pie spice, blackberries...structured yet silky. Pretty amazing for the price. I got so excited to see this coming on shore, I ordered ten cases.
Psssssst, guess what: we'll crack a bottle this Friday night. Try after your Rosé wines (come early...when it's gone, it's gone).

BERGERIE DE L'HORTUS Pic Saint Loup
"Classique" 2005  $16/bottle

Pic Saint Loup is the Languedoc wine appelation AND the Mountain Peak (Pic) that looks over it. We're about 40 miles from the Southern Rhone Valley, and the recipe, and flavor, is similar. 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. No oak influence to speak of. This wine is spice, wild red fruits and wild herbs de Provence (garrigue). Taste concentrated raspberries, blueberries and wild cherries, allspice, lavender, rosemary and black pepper. Medium-full body, exceptional intensity and BBQ versatility. Red meats, white meats, orange-fleshed fish (salmon) are all winners with the L'Hortus.

MAS DES BRESSADES Syrah-Grenache
Vin de Pays du Gard 2007  $15/bottle
My introduction to the 2007 Southern Rhone/France reds was with this wine. It was late last year. I loved it then, I love it now. Sweet & spicy berries, cracked black pepper, nutmeg and espresso. It's very rich with soft tannins. Great for pouring a fat glass and drinking al fresco with grillin' smoke swirling about. NO BRAINER RED.

CHATEAU MAS NEUF Costières de Nîmes 2006  $15/bottle
Mas Neuf consistently makes one of our favorite big red "value wines" from anywhere.  This 2006 delivers the tasty goods. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre & Carignane blend makes for a complex, spicy, hearty red. Taste classic Mediterranean flavors of anise, violets, rosemary and tapenade along with rich, chewy, forward black berries & cherries.
