Favorite Alfresco Wines From near and far

Greetings!
This week's warm spell has me thinking about outdoor dining in a thirsty way. Smoky, my trusty Weber, was happy to be unzipped, as it were, last weekend. Burgers, nice and simple, were the menu. Did you know the trick about making the center of the burger thinner before cooking, so the cooked burger is perfectly flat? No sliding pickles & tomatoes at our house, thank goodness! The little things make me so happy. My four suggestions are from near and far. Southern France, where the wines are bold and graceful both, capture my outdoor dining eye with their alluring noses, rich flavors and food-friendliness. California wines are naturals with grilled goodies, especially when they carry spice and richness the way today's two Cal wines do. Live locally? Come see us at the shop and pick up these four fabulous wines.
Tasting This Friday: Aromatic Whites for the Spring. Come to Back Room Wines this Friday night, anytime from 5 to 8 P.M., and enjoy Riesling, Viognier, Torrontes, Gewurztraminer, Erbaluce, Moscato and one big fun blend. Three continents are represented amongst our seven wine line-up. It's a $15 tasting, and all wines poured will be for sale at 10% discount.
Be it for tasting, shopping or both, we look forward to seeing you at the shop.
At the Copa, Copa Cabana, Dan.

Alfresco Wines Perfect for the warm, spring air
BERGERIE DE L'HORTUS "Rosé de Saignée" 2008 $14 We received one case of this Languedoc, France Rosé last week to check it out. We like the l'Hortus Rosé every year, but with so many good pink wines to choose from, we're careful to select the best. The day it arrived, we chilled a bottle then popped the cork a while later. Aaaahhhhhhhhh. 50%
Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah. Nice & light, with fresh strawberry,
tangerine and lime fruits. A whiff of violets, Herbs de Provence and white
pepper. Good acidity and very fresh. Winner winner, with or without Chicken Dinner. Last week's case was quickly bought up and enjoyed (I know as I've received glowing feedback on it already). Not sure, but I believe much of it was enjoyed outdoors. We have a bunch more coming in early today. We'll keep the L'Hortus Rose around as long as we can through the summer, with one or two cold ones on hand for instant imbibement.
CULLER Syrah, Napa Valley 2006 $30 Karen
Culler is one of California's best Syrah producers. Her wines taste like Syrah
while keeping a fruity, lush "deliciousness" about them. This Syrah is the
bomb, giving loads of sweet, dark, juicy pleasure. Taste the black & red
cherries, black pepper, licorice, berry pie and baker's chocolate. This mouthful of a Syrah is very "California Style," meaning it's particulary pronounced on the dark fruits and richness and not-so-much on the meaty/ olive side of Syrah. Red meat fans get going with this: tri-tip, sausages and hangar steak are naturals. 239 cases made.
SCHULZ "Samuel's Cuvée" Napa Valley 2006 $22 60% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Second week in a row "Sammy" has made the email. Why? Reasons one, two and three: It's really delicious, customers have loved it, and it's perfect for the week's al fresco theme. Four and five: it's a big, bold red and a great value, two important qualities for outdoor drinking reds. Subtlety gets lost and the complexities one expects from pricier wines are hard to taste alfresco. Six: I jumped on the last few cases, so rather than using it as a makeshift bench, I'd prefer to see Sammy find good homes. All Napa fruit, rich
berry flavors bordering on jammy, pie spices, black pepper and cocoa
overtones. It's luscious, full-bodied and very easy to like.
DOMAINE DE LA PERTUISANE "Le Nain Violet" 2005 $19
From
Maury, the SW corner of France (Catalonia). "Le Nain Violet" means "The Purple Dwarf," referring to the squat vines growing in the heavy rock vineyards of Maury. ½ Grenache, 2/5 Syrah + Carignane. Big nose of dark
strawberries, blueberry liqueur, lavender and black peppercorns. In the mouth taste more blueberry, pomegranate, black cherry pie and flavors we relate to the grill: black
pepper, soy sauce, smoke and Herbs de Provence. The firm yet supple tannins give the support needed to hold up to fun in the sun. An outstanding wine, especially for the price.
Who's in for an Alfresco Case? Mixed Case. Three bottles of each: $229 (includes 10% case discount)
