More Delicious Red Blends You Can Count On
|
|
|
Greetings!
What gall, selling you delicious California red wines on Tax Day Eve. Hopefully your return is now sealed and stamped so you can celebrate (or lick your wounds, as the case may be) with the six very reasonably priced, outstanding red blends from Napa & Sonoma. Some of these you may know...maybe even bought and tried them recently (Schulz, Jules Melange, Michael Austin). Two are brand-spankin' new to the shop (Eric Guerra, Sean Thackrey). All six have a "come hither" forward, friendly, slightly precocious flavor to them. (Makes me happy when I can use the term "come hither"). And by the way, such a delicious case of California red wine for $280? How's that for tax relief? The wines and my case to sell you a case are below.
Tasting Events: It's a Pinot Party this Friday night. Details are just below & to the right. Selling Point #1 for Pinot Party are the great wines being served, from bubbles to big red. Selling Point #2 are THE SNACKS: Dips & Spreads prepared by Lucy Gore of Cafe Lucy/Relish fame. (Local readers know of Lucy). Pinot-friendly dips are the plan. Lucy and I are strategerizing about the menu this morning. If you're within sipping distance of BRW, hope to see you in the shop. Let Love Rule, Dan.

Red Blends You Can Count On Here are six beauties for youJULES MELANGE Claret Napa Valley 2006 $28 54% Cabernet Franc, 42% Merlot, 4% Syrah. Julianna (Jules) poured this at BACK ROOM BLOW OUT XXXI two Fridays' ago. (Blow Out XXXII is Friday night, June 12, by the way. Mark it down.) The wine is really delicious-drinking so good today. Dark berries, touch of mocha, violets, peppercorns...a seamless red wine that goes down easy and strong. If you're thinking this wine will be light, it's not. Boasts great concentration with curves and punch. 125 cases made. ERIC GUERRA "Ispiri" Alexander Valley 2006 $29
75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ispiri means "it inspires" in Italian. Stylistically there's nothing Italian-esque in this very delicious, full-bodied, uncomplicated blend of Merlot and Cabernet
Sauvignon. Loads of spice, juicy/jammy, lush and exceptionally full-bodied &
rich. Nice kiss of sweet French oak gives even more allure. "Ispiri" is our latest "no-brainer wine," meaning we know that everyone who likes big reds will enjoy it!
MICHAEL AUSTIN "Bad Habit - Priest Ranch" Napa Valley 2005 $28A blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache from the mountainous terrain of Napa just east of the Valley floor. Michael Austin was started by two Catholic-raised men. Just happens the vineyard from which the grapes come is "Priest Ranch." "Bad Habit" is their idea. Regardless, this is delicious, bold, spicy red wine that's drinking great right now. Black pepper, anise and Indian spices. Intense briary fruit flavors and hard raspberry & strawberry candies. Grip of tannins at the
end make it evident that it's mountain wine, and the bit of bottle age now under its belt (or habit, as it were) has "Bad Habit" drinking at its very best.
SEAN THACKREY "Pleiades XVII" California $25 This
semi-cult wine is one of the first California red blends (it's the 17th
bottling you see) and it's still one of the best. A "kitchen sink" blend if there ever was one. Nine grapes at least in this rather one-of-a-kind, non-vintage, delicious red. Smell the peppercorns, allspice, berry pie, mocha and curry. Taste the rich berry/cherry, fresh, concentrated, perfectly ripe
and balanced (not jammy). Bodacious BBQ wine.
SCHULZ "Samuel's Cuvee" Napa Valley 2006 $22 60% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Only outstanding customer reviews for this wine. We first suggested and sold it in January. Great news for us when Owner John Schulz made more available. We now have plenty to sell. No shocking descriptions here. All Napa fruit, rich
berry flavors bordering on jammy, pie spices, black pepper and cocoa
overtones. It's luscious, full-bodied and very easy to like.
HIGHFLYER "Aviator Red" California 2006 $25
Syrah, Zinfandel, Grenache blend. Fruit comes from Napa, Sonoma and Santa Barbara Counties. Featured about a month ago and was very well received. A perfect conclusion to this exceptional list of California reds. Black
fruits, dark spices, extremely concentrated and rich. Nice, fine tannins at
end. Big red blend lovers must try!
Mixed Case. Two bottles of each: $280 (includes over 10% discount)
Half case. One of each: $150 (includes over 5% discount)

We made quiche on Sunday. When did you last make quiche? And no Trader Joe's crust either...made from scratch. Two sticks of butter in there! Quiche, baked ham and The Masters on Easter Sunday. Oh yes, and wine too. Just a little. But no Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs. Got my fill last month, and now looking for them on sale.
