 Greetings!

Our newsletter subject title, Power Trip and Poligrip, was a bit of a teaser this month. We wanted to catch your attention and create some interest in our featured content.  Sandy's article, Sharing Power, is an important one. It focuses on the challenges dentists have as the owner, manager, and chief producer in their business and the need for other team members to take some of the load off the dentist. Sandy outlines the two most extreme leadership styles and alternatives that can help the dentist and team work together with shared power.

Our other topic has to do with the need for more denture-focused practices (thus the reference to Poligrip), A Successful Denture Practice? provides readers with a link to Sandy's article in Dental Economics and offers an opportunity to explore the concept in your own practice.

And our last article will update you on the programs we are launching and offers you the opportunity to participate.

We are also announcing the creation of the Facebook Fan Page. Please visit often even if you aren't a Facebook-a-holic. We promised to provide enlightening and useful information while keeping it fun.

Sharing Power
by Sandy Roth

My experience with practices continues to suggest a simple fact: dentists need more help. It is simply too difficult to own the business, lead the team, manage the resources, produce the dentistry and be responsible for virtually every significant decision in the day. The authority and power to make decisions (and the responsibility and accountability which go along with those decisions) must be shared.

But many dentists have no idea how to share power and many team members are unsure of what to do when power is shared. Although there are notable exceptions, many dentists tend toward one of two extremes: micro-managers and abdicators. Let's have a look at these two styles and possible alternatives.

A Successful Denture Practice?
by MaryBeth Head

By the best estimate, some 10% of adults over the age of 35 are completely edentulous in the US. Based on the most recent US census, that accounts for well over 10 million people.  And GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of such denture products as Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh, and Extra Care, reported more than $520 million in denture adhesive sales last year alone.

There is also reason to believe that this percentage may increase with the economic distress causing home foreclosures, unemployment and homelessness. And while the thinking among some dentists is that a "denture practice" is not a fulfilling or viable model, we hope to change that perception.  There is a market for the service and a population whose needs are ready to be served.  That is the message of a recent article Sandy wrote for Dental Economics. To read the article, click here.

The article piqued quite a bit of interest. A number of dentists are re-thinking their practices and have begun to ask whether the denture practice model might be viable in their community. Many have called us with questions ranging from whether they should charge for consultation appointments or take insurance, to getting advice on marketing strategies and how they might go about creating an in-house lab.

As a result, Sandy and Doug are providing consulting services focused on transitioning to the denture practice model. A combination of phone discussions, on-site visits to the Denture Care Center (Doug's practice) and the client's own practice, and evaluation and goal-setting for the transition are options for the consultation service.

If this is something you have considered but weren't sure whether it would work for you or where and how to begin, we would love to help you.

Contact MaryBeth (800-848-8326) to arrange a time to speak with Sandy. The call is complimentary and the goal is to help you decide whether this concept might be a good fit for you.
