Dawson Academy
 Greetings!

Since February is reserved for all things related to love, we thought we would address the topic in a slightly different way.  Sure, you have a deep and sincere interest in cultivating and growing a good relationship with your spouse or significant other. But when it comes to your work colleagues, it can sometimes be challenging. After all, you didn't enter into these relationships with the same goal in mind. And frankly, some people mix like oil and water. But the fact is, you all have a job to do and you must find a way to settle your differences so you can perform your best.

In the article "Being Nice", we examine how women tend to deal with confrontation and why this occurs. We address learning to tell the truth with grace and how to handle confrontation and disagreement with dignity. And if you have pre-teen or teenage girls, Sandy references several books you may want to read.

In "Clearing the Junk", we address what can happen in even the most sophisticated practices that can hold your team back.  Without realizing it, your group can develop sloppy habits, intra-team baggage, unresolved issues, resentments, and judgmental attitudes that erode your relationships with one another.

We help teams successfully address these issues and move on to become great communicators and partners. Contact us if you would like some help with this.

Being "Nice"
by Sandy Roth

In working with dentists and their teams, I frequently see patterns that are painful to watch and hard for them to understand. One could spend a lifetime, of course, studying human behavior and still be left with many bewildering questions. Like why so many dentists are fearful of giving patients clear, direct information and their honest clinical opinion.  And why is it so difficult for them to convey expectations to their staffs. These issues are frequently the most challenging and can easily cripple a team.

One particularly perplexing phenomenon is
one I have observed with frustration for many years. It has often been the cause of atomic meltdown of the team and it can scuttle the efforts of even the most accomplished and skilled employees. It is, quite frankly, the ease with which otherwise wonderful women are mean and nasty to one another. Women who are socially well-adjusted and competent in their performance yet who handle their disagreements in emotionally aggressive ways.

This phenomenon is a decidedly a female one,
and since most dental team members are female, this is not a simple problem. It is pervasive and highly problematic. First, we'll take a look at how this problem plays itself out in the practice, then I'll speculate about how reasonable people could behave in such ways.

Clearing the Junk
by Sandy Roth

There's an old saying, "If the only thing in your toolbox is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." I've been seeing a lot of nails lately.

Now it is true that almost no one calls us by mistake looking for clinical training or help with OSHA compliance. In fact, I am proud that we have earned our reputation for ProSynergy as THE source of learning resources for communications and relationship-building. Without question, the tools in our toolbox  focus on the aspects of practice development that are enhanced
by (1) clear, open and effective communication of information and feelings and (2) relationship-building skills.

Those attracted to our work have a few things in common. In most cases, dentists call us when they are stuck and want fresh perspective. Almost all have worked, sometimes extensively, with one or more management or business consultants. For the most part, they found value in those services, but are now looking for something more.

These dentists have fairly sophisticated practices and great staff - often, the best staff ever. They have developed their clinical skills well beyond the ordinary and their referral network is strong. They have established basic systems and their practices function pretty well. They know they are ready to go to the "next level," - to improve their communications skills and build behavioral principles into their practices. What they don'talways know is where and how to begin.

Although most teams think they should begin with problem-solving and skill-building, the first step is almost always clearing the junk.

Next month's topic:
Our Facilitator Study Club members are a very dedicated and talented group. They are the glue that keeps their practices together and moving forward, even in tough times.  They will share their strategies for weathering the economic storm.

We would love to hear your ideas as well.
