Dental Woes in an Economic Downturn

The practice had been humming along at a decent pace for two solid years. Dr. Yaeger's schedule was always booked well in advance and the occasional cancellation was a welcome opportunity for him to catch his breath. The staff had become comfortable with the pace and, frankly, they didn't have to work that hard to keep patients on the books. Then came the changes. Subtle at first but more apparent recently. Real estate prices fell. There were rumors about more jobs going oversees. A few more stores closed and couple of smaller businesses failed. November was a disaster. And while it had never been their best month, this was something new. They started to see holes in the schedule in December - almost unheard of. The end of the year had always been busy with kids home from college and people using up the remainder of their dental coverage. Not this year. January wasn't looking much better either. Hey Buddy, Got Change?

Let's get something out on the table right away. When it comes to change, you don't get a vote. Change is a given. It will happen all around you and you cannot stop it. You either acknowledge it, address it, and accommodate to it or it will have its way with you.
There has been enormous change in our society at all levels. Those who embrace and participate in the changes which are occurring are more likely to emerge stronger and healthier than those who run from it. You might think about sticking your head in the sand like the proverbial ostrich (I think that only happens in cartoons) or you can get with the program. I challenge us all to do the latter.
