Trade Tidbits
Packaging...
an Often Overlooked Aspect of Exporting
Courtesy of
Sara E. Scarfo
Bentley Packaging
A largely overlooked cost in exporting is the packaging of your product. Failure to understand the importance of proper packaging can cause damage to the product, misrouting of the package in transit, and ultimately delay in delivery to your customer. | |
Here are some quick tips:
Domestic packaging and truck loading techniques are NOT adequate for ocean shipping and container loading.
Read your order carefully to understand if special packaging and markings are REQUIRED or if there is a requirement for long term storage.
Keep accurate records of package contents for reference and correlation to exporting packing list.
Take photos to show professional packaging was employed should there be a damage or loss claim to be filed.
More details, as well as Sara's contact information are on our WTC blog

This intensive workshop covered all aspects of exporting dual use items, from classifying your product's correct ECCN number, to reading the country limitations schedule all the way through applying for an export license and record keeping requirements. Presenters included the Bureau of Industry and Security, US Census Bureau, US Customs and Border Protection and OFAC - all of them did a great job presenting this difficult subject. |

International Use of Social Media Update: UK
Our informal survey of other World Trade Centers continues
We try keep up with World Trade Centers through social media and have asked other tweeting WTCs for insight into the use of social media among their members and in their respective countries. This month, the WTC Hull and Humber (located in Yorkshire, UK) responded with some of their own observations:
Social Media is very big in the UK and companies tend to use 3 main social network sites: 1.Twitter, 2.Facebook and 3.LinkedIn. They use these sites to promote their products but to also promote their contacts! At tradeshows, companies tend to have their facebook/twitter addresses on their banners and business cards as well as on email address signatures. |
