Tuesday, October 23 - Wednesday, October 31: Red Ribbon Week. Schools will conduct activities to recognize Red Ribbon Week, the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué "Kiki" Camarena. In February, 1985, Camarena was acting undercover in Guadalajara, Mexico, when he was kidnapped, tortured, and brutally murdered. Shortly after his death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Camarena's high school friend Henry Lozano launched "Camarena Clubs" in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, California. It is estimated that more than 80 million people participate in Red Ribbon events each year.

Saturday, October 27: More than 200 volunteers from the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health, Inc., the Boise School District and W.H. Taft Elementary School, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Boise community will join forces to build a new playground at the school, located at 3722 N. Anderson St.  The new playground's design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in September.

 

The schedule of events is as follows:

8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.            Kick-off ceremony and volunteer deployment

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.           Best viewing of playground construction

1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.            Final construction phase and adjustments

2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.            Ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate new play area

  

Saturday, October 27: Mel Shelton District III Marching Band Competition, Boise State University's Bronco Stadium. Doors open at 1 p.m.; competition begins at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate - $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors; children ages 1-5 are free. This year, 27 bands from across the Treasure Valley will participate. Tuesday, October 30: Boise National College Fair, Boise Centre on the Grove, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Free and open to the public, the Boise National College Fair is sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and allows students to interact with admission representatives from a wide range of post secondary institutions.

 

At this year's event, students and their parents can visit the Counseling Center and talk with high school counselors, representatives from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Test (ACT) and more. Students and their parents can meet admission representatives from local colleges and universities including Boise State University, College of Southern Idaho, Idaho State University, University of Idaho, and others. Admission representatives will also be on hand from out-of-state colleges and universities including Montana State University, Oregon State University, Seattle Pacific University, University of Montana, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Washington State University, military service academies, and many more.

 

In addition, students and their parents can learn about educational opportunities through informational seminars on topics such as NCAA Eligibility and Recruitment for the College-Bound Athlete; Navigating the College Application Process; Searching, Applying and Competing for Scholarships; Loans, Budgets, Credit Cards - What They Mean to You; 9th and 10th Grade: Planning Ahead; Financial Aid Workshop; and more.

 

Wednesday, October 31: Parent Teacher Conferences. No school for Boise School District kindergarten students only.

 

Thursday, November 1 and Friday, November 2: Parent Teacher Conferences. No school for Boise School District students grades K-6.

 

Friday, November 2: Secondary Professional Staff Development activities. No school for Boise School District students grades 7-12.

 

Grace Jordan Group Recognized: Grace Jordan Elementary School's "Girls with Grace" were recognized as the largest school group participating in the 20th Annual Women's Fitness Celebration held on Saturday, September 22. In addition to receiving a flag, the team also earned a cash prize of up to $500. Thirty-six students and adults formed the team. 

 

Grace Jordan Class Creates Video: A video created by teacher Madeleine  Johnson and her third grade class was one of three finalists in Idaho in the "MyFuture" Student Tech Contest, sponsored by the Idaho Technology Council and the Idaho Leads Project. The contest asked Idaho's K-12 students and teachers to imagine the classroom of the future by creating short videos.

 

Borah High Student Selected for Panel: Borah High School student Oakley Richins was recently offered a place on the Advisory Panel on Student Concerns by the College Board. This is a 3-year commitment which will require some travel, paid for by the College Board, and attendance at meetings and conferences. Richins will offer insight into education practices that influence College Board policies and programs.

 

Boise High Student Selected as Ambassador: Boise High School student Jesse Moneyhun was selected to serve as a National Child Awareness Month Youth Ambassador by Youth Service America and Festival of Children Foundation. September was National Child Awareness Month. During September, Moneyhun traveled to Washington, DC, for leadership training and a networking event on Capitol Hill. Moneyhun was one of 51 Ambassadors selected from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

 

Boise High Orchestra Selected to Perform: The Boise High School Chamber Orchestra has been selected to perform for the Northwest NAfME (National Association for Music Educators) Conference in February 2013, in Portland, OR.

 

BSD Teachers, Counselors Recognized: On Thursday, September 27, Boise State University hosted the Celebration of Teaching Mentors of the Year Awards Dinner. This celebration honors excellent southwest Idaho public school teachers and counselors who guide, support, and encourage fellow educators in their pursuit of effective teaching and professional growth. Among this year's honorees from the Boise School District were Emily Morgan, Language Arts teacher, Fairmont Jr. High; Lindsey Yundt, Mathematics teacher, South Jr. High; and Sandy Rumpel, BSD Counseling Supervisor.

 

Wm. H. Taft Library Receives Funds: The W.H. Taft Elementary School library has received a $5,000 grant from the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL). The Taft library was the only Boise School District library selected by the ICFL for this grant for a new program. This "Mini Grant" program will provide for purchasing of non-fiction books to be checked out by Taft's developmental preschool, kindergarten, and first grade students in the first semester. The Idaho Legislature funded this opportunity to all Idaho elementary libraries to encourage use of non-fiction books to promote literacy in younger grades. W.H. Taft will be the first to utilize this grant as a pilot program.

 

The W.H. Taft Elementary Library has also received a $1,500 grant from the Boise Education Foundation via The Thomas & Mildred Allen Family Foundation. This grant will fund purchasing of new biographies, including a complete presidential set, and biographies of other world leaders.
