Greetings!

Welcome to the Book Vine!
At 9 a.m. each morning, I read new books to the staff, and we discuss whether it's a fit for our catalog.  They don't let me miss a day!  Some books challenge, some inspire, and some soothe.  We look for books that make reading worth coming back to, day in and day out.

For your convenience we've put together a great line-up of titles to meet the needs of social and emotional issues that may occur during the school year. And, as always, if you would like suggestions or advice, give us a call.  It really is our pleasure.

Do YDO YOU KNOW...ou Know Which Ones Will Grow?
Do You Know Which Ones Will Grow?  This is the most dynamic preschool book we have seen in years. Written by Susan A. Shea and illustrated by Tom Slaughter, it is inventive and thought-provoking. A lesson in animate and inanimate objects and as the title suggests, knowing which ones will grow and which ones will not, is a little like watching a magic trick unfold. Readers will delight in the rhyming text which lilts along from one question to the next with fresh and bold objects, animals and one fetching little boy in a striped shirt. A must have for parents and teachers.

EveEven Monsters...n Monsters Need Haircuts
In most every film, Dracula is always well-coiffed. He arrives outside each window with a perfect widow's peak, not a hair out of place. The Wolfman, on the other hand has a more difficult time of it but that is the nature of turning into a wolf each full moon. This doesn't mean that he won't nip by the barbershop before a night's outing. Thus we have the title, Even Monsters Need Haircuts. It is a vespertine peek into an ordinary barbershop transformed by the power of the full moon. A young boy awaits his unusual clientele for their monthly haircuts, preparing the shop with just the right tonics and powders for his customers. Amusing and clever the text provides subtle jokes while the illustrations are spot on for the preschool crowd, not too scary but they give enough visual information to identify the usual suspects.

Peter H. Reynolds

A New York Times best-selling author and illustrator, Reynolds wrote his first story in the seventh grade at the suggestion of his math teacher. His first short film was born from this encouragement. Reynolds, owner of the Boston-based company FableVision and a children's bookstore, Blue Bunny Books and Toys, continues to support his community, create films, software, books and more. His boReynolds drawingoks include: Sky Color, Dot, Ish, and Plant a Kiss. Peter will be speaking and signing books at NAEYC in Atlanta in November.

On the subject of creating Peter has this to say about the creative process, "Creative thinking is the fuel for getting things going. Dreaming about the project is a huge part of the process. The actual 'doing' requires following through on the dream, but the dream is the rough sketch. I encourage people to ponder and conjure the vision, but eventually I'll nudge you to 'prove your groove.'  Don't just say you are a writer... Write. Don't just dream about making a film... Pick up the camera and go!"

April Pulley Sayre

April is one of a kind. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina with nature running through her veins. As an erudite presenter on the subjects of writing, science education, children's literature, and wildlife gardening, she speaks to more than 15,000 people a year. She has written more than 55 books on natural history for children and adults and was awarded the 2008 Theodor "Seuss" Geisel Honor Award for her title, Vulture View. Bird watching, traveling, speaking to students and writing are just a few of April's many talents and passions. Her most recent title, published by Beach Lane Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster is, Go, Go, Grapes: A Fruit Chant! Be sure to see her at NAEYC in Atlanta in November.

Mem Fox

You would expect that Mem Fox has sold quite a number of children's books but truthfully that is just the tip of her iceberg. First of all, she has a very informative website that surprisingly contains not one dessert recipe but two; one for Chocolate Mousse and one for Chocolate Fudge. As a side note to chocolate, Mem is dynamic, brilliant, and passionate about teaching and literacy. She taught at the School of Education at Flinders University in South Australia for twenty-four years and now she spends her time writing children's books and speaking to educators across the globe. I recommend reading the Philosophy section of her website, which is a speech she gave to a graduating class, as it is inspiring, humbling and insightful. Reading Magic should be read by anyone having a child or teaching children. It is a plea not only for literacy but for reading aloud to children. Her title, Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes, spent 18 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Forthcoming titles include Tell Me about Your Day Today and Two Little Monkeys. Mem will be the opening keynote speaker at the NAEYC conference in Atlanta this November.

Helpful Hint

When you read to a child, you are giving that child a gift.  Select it carefully and give it with enthusiasm, as you would any gift.  Children will realize they are receiving something special.
