Greetings!
The weather has gotten surprisingly cool, and almost fall-like.  The timing is perfect too.  Peaches don't like cold nights; the fruit will drop if it gets too cold.  Luckily we have harvested the last of our peach crop, and this will be our last weekend with peaches at market.  And apples, on the other hand, love the cold nights.  Apples have better color when the nights are cool and the days are sunny and bright.

We will be bringing pumpkins, gourds, and squash to market before you know it!  They just need to cure a little bit more on the vine before they are ready to harvest.  But start thinking about your home Fall decor, and favorite pumpkin recipe, and you can purchase everything you need at the farmers market.

You'll be able to find eight varieties of apples under the Kuhn Orchards' tent, and the list will keep growing!

Peter Piper's Peppers
Everyone knows the famous tongue twister Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.  But do you think Peter Piper would have misplaced his peck of peppers if he had picked Kuhn Orchards sweet peppers?!  Probably not, because they are delicious!

Sidney and Mary Margaret agreed that Kuhn Orchards' peppers would have to be different than traditional bell peppers; they have to be sweet, delicious, and nothing like you will find in the grocery store.  And that is exactly what Kuhn Orchards sweet peppers are.  We grow an array of varieties:
  • Italian Frying Peppers are long and narrow peppers and come in red, yellow, and orange (the roasted medley makes a beautiful side dish!)
  • Round of Hungary Peppers are red, round and squatty pumpkin shaped peppers (they are Dave's favorite!)
  • Pimiento Peppers are smooth and rounded with a slight point on the bottom
Asian Pears
Asian Pears can accurately be dubbed "the ugly duckling" of the fruit world.  They have a very thin skin and have the tendency to develop dark marks on their skin when they rub against each other.  This marking is not a bruise, as the flesh of the Asian pear is still firm.

However, once the skin turns dark, folks tend to find the Asian pear unattractive.  So, since the Asian pear is thin skinned (and we don't want them to have hurt feelings because no one wants to take them home!) - we have purchased "fruit sleeves" to protect the fruit from rubbing marks.

Many supermarkets request that their pear suppliers package Asian pears in these protective sleeves or in other protective packaging.  We hope you appreciate the extra care we are taking, and trust that these Asian pears are still the Kuhn Orchards farm fresh pears you have grown to enjoy over the years.  Click here to read more about Asian Pears.

Chestnut Season
chestnut grove
Many folks walk past our display of these fall gems and do a double take, and then say "What's this?!"  "Those are Chestnuts," we'll reply.

Our Chestnut grove was planted about 60 years ago; Dave's uncle, Don Kuhn, planted the chestnut grove and it is a beautiful site in the fall!
chestnuts

We will be bringing some chestnuts to market this weekend,
and will continue gathering them as they fall from the trees.

If you are interested in learning more about chestnuts, check out our website.  We have instructions on how to prepare them, and recipes for braised chestnuts and chestnut soup.
