Greetings!
Well - it is officially "that time of year!"  Our first Farmers Market opens at Crystal City on May 1st and the rest of the markets will follow suite (with the exception of the NoMA market - opening May 30th).  We're all set for an outstanding season, and hope you are too!  So here's to a wonderful 2012 market!  (clink your glass, now!)

We have lots of spring goodies to bring you, so read further and make your shopping list.  Speaking of shopping lists...be sure to pick up your free market shopping list tablet when you check out at market.  And...a reward is at the bottom of this email newsletter - which may come in handy at check-out!

We look forward to seeing you at market!
Apples... Pink Lady, Fuji, GoldRush & York... & Asian Pears
We will be bringing delicious apples (harvested last fall) to market.

Pink Lady -- Tart yet sweet, with a hint of champagne fizz.  On the smaller side and great for the kids' lunch boxes as they look forward to wrapping up another school year.

Fuji -- These are large juicy, sweet and crunchy apples.  They are so juicy you will need a napkin when you eat our Fuji!

GoldRush -- Are by far the top-pick of apples by our employees.  They have a sweet and tangy flavor and a spectacular crunch. This is the ideal time of year to enjoy a GoldRush because with time the flavor mellows and becomes complex.

York -- Is a PA classic as it was discovered in
YorkStripes1830 in York County, PA which is fairly close to our farm.  It is also a classic apple for making pies as they hold their shape when baking. The York apple is famous for its lopsided shape.  Here's a neat picture of a bi-colored York.

Honey Core Asian Pears -- No, Honey Core isn't the official name, but its what we've dubbed our Asian Pears.  Because of the huge amount of rain we had last fall, our Asian Pears now have internal browning.  They still are sweet, crunchy, and with spectacular flavor.
You might glance at our Asian Pears and imagine they are a crate full of citronella candles.  We have purchased these fruit sleeves to protect our Asian Pears.  They have a delicate and thin skin, so this prevents bruising or rubbing against other pears.
Fresh Pressed Cider
We just took a truck full of our Pink Lady,
Jarred Goods & Cider
GoldRush, and York apples to the cider mill and plan to pick up the jugs of cider in the nick-of-time for market.  And as always, we'll have samples for you to enjoy!

Last fall, we made all sorts of new jarred goods.
We have Sweetened and Unsweetened Apple Sauce made from our Jonagold apples.  We
Canned Peaches
also have Spiced Apple Butter made from a delicious blend of apples.  Our Heirloom Pumpkin Butter is wonderful, especially if you are reminiscent of fall. We also canned peaches in glass jars and they look beautiful!
Spring Veggies!
Dave sorting asparagus
Have you been craving fresh picked asparagus?

Did you cheat and buy some at the grocery store? (Don't worry, I cheated too back in March.  It was a horrible eating experience and I should've known better.)

Well, don't you fret.  We have fresh bunches of tender tips of asparagus.  Dave will be hand sorting and packing the asparagus just for you!

Rhubarb StalksThe rhubarb is slowly starting to produce thick lemony stalks.  But we'll bring what we can to market.  So if you want some the first day of market, be sure to come early!

We'll also be bringing Red Zeppelin and Copra onions, along with shallots.

Have you tried our Sunchokes or Horseradish?  Click here to read more about Sunchokes (a.k.a. Jerusalem Artichokes). And you can make fresh cocktail sauce with the horseradish. Try Mary Margaret's family recipe; her dad used to make it during holiday dinners in North Carolina.
