Because of the early spring,

this is definitely the year to receive our e-newsletter and to check our Facebook page for updates.

Fruit and vegetables might be harvested earlier than normal, and you won't want to miss them!

Feel free to forward the newsletter to friends who might be interested in our fruit and vegetables using the link at the top of the email.

Greetings!
The early spring weather was quite a treat; we were able to plant peach, nectarine, apple, and pear trees in an ideal climate. And we also prepped the soil for planting some of our vegetables.

However, as the cold nights settled in, we took precaution and protected our strawberry plantings.  The blossoms that have bloomed - peach, apricot, and plum - are delicate little flowers, yet it is surprising that they can be resilient to the chilly nights.  Only time will tell what our crop will look like, but we are staying optimistic!
Welcome, Anthony!!
We would like to welcome Anthony Herring back to Kuhn Orchards. That's right; he is not a stranger to Kuhn Orchards. Anthony grew up in Cashtown, right down the road from the farm and has spent lots of time on the farm.  Anthony worked for Kuhn Orchards in the summer time while he was in high school and after graduating, he began working full-time.  He learned everything on the job and eventually worked his was up to Assistant Production Manager and then to Production Manager.

In 2003, Anthony left to work for a large orchard and packing operation in the area.  There he was a Crew Supervisor and learned how to teach others to care for the orchard.

We are excited to have Anthony return to Kuhn Orchards; he will be our Assistant Production Manager and will work closely with Rusty, and will also oversee the crews in the orchard.

Anthony is passionate about working outside and teaching others about orchard production.  He is also an avid hunter and fisher.  Another great tid-bit about Anthony...he is Sidney's fiance!!
New Market Openings & 2012 Market Schedule
We have  received confirmation for all of our markets this year.  They are all listed to the left and are also posted on our website along with links directing you to the market website.

We have two new markets this year!
Frying Pan Farm Park started in February and is an indoor farmers market until the end of April.  Then it will move outside for remainder of the market season.  You can come and see Sandy on Thursdays from 2:30pm until 6:30pm.

We will start the Palisades Farmers Market this Sunday, April 1st from 9am until 1pm.  Sidney and Jess will be attending the market.  Click on the "Ripe & Ready" fruit icon to see what we will be bringing to market!

For customers who were regular shoppers at the Fairfax Farmers Market on Tuesdays at the Van Dyck Park:  This market will not be in operation this year.  We hope you will be able to continue shopping with Kuhn Orchards at one of our many other market locations in the area!

Strawberries Spend the Night in Igloos!
Strawberry Freeze Prevention
With the chilly nights we have experienced recently, it is necessary for us to take precaution to protect our strawberry plants.  We do this by covering the strawberry plants and turning on the overhead sprinkling/irrigation system at night.  Dave has spent the last two evenings checking on the irrigation system in the wee-hours of the morning.  Its important for him to monitor them so the irrigation does not freeze and bust.  We had about 3/4-inch of ice on-top of the plastic covering.  The ice essentially creates a layer of insulation over the plants to protect them from the cold.  Take a look at our YouTube slideshow.
