Our extraordinary speaker was Mr. C. Michael (Mike) Armstrong, retired CEO of AT&T, presenting "Ethics in Business." Mr. Armstrong holds a very full resume including past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Chairman and Director Emeritus of Comcast Corporation, and Hughes Electronics, and multiple other senior management and leadership positions within both the government and private sectors.
Mr. Armstrong's speech was based upon his ten-years as a Business Professor at MIT, teaching lectures, and his many years of business experience. He notes that ethical behavior is always a business dilemma, requires a decision, and is vitally important. He presented the example of World Com fraud as a key example of non-ethical behavior. The key principles of ethical decision making that were presented were; Define the "Downside Risk," Take "Me" out of the decision process, Prioritize the impact, Realize that "market practice" is not always equal to ethical behavior, and finally, Assume nothing. For each principle, a real life experience, including some involving life and death situations, was given to underline how each principle can guide us in both our professional and daily lives. In closing, a number of questions were entertained and again answers revolved around the reality of our society.
