Our meeting on January 16 was a great success. 6 members attended and all stayed for an excellent lunch and more stimulating conversation.
The discussion of "The Swamp" was lively and informative highlighted by Rob Gilmore relating his Everglades explorations and showing us his charts that provided a detail of the lower Everglades most of us had not seen before.
The discussion concluded with an update by Frank Murphy on the current restoration project status. Everyone was given a list of websites in case they would like to do any further reserarch on their own.
We discussed whether we should keep to a South Florida theme but decided not to do so. However, we did decide to continue that theme for our February 20 meeting and read a shorter book by a local author Doris Reynolds ' When Peacocks were Roasted and Mullet Was Fried' about the development of Naples.
This book is available, new, in the lobby of The Naples Daily News at 1100 Immokalee (corner of Creekside), in the local libraries and can be purchased used through Amazon for very low prices.
For the March 19 Meeting we will discuss 'The Swerve: How the World Became Modern' by Sidney Greenblatt and tenatively ( we will decide on February 20), for the April 16 meeting we will discuss 'The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World' by Daniel Yergin.
Ian Gordon has taken on other responsibilities so I will be the primary
contact and organizer for our Book Club. Please e-mail me with any comments or suggestions.
I will send out an e-mail in about two weeks reminding you of the next
meeting and asking you to respond if you will attend.
