Children's Playground Fall Safety: What You Don't Know Can Hurt Them

By Michael Baldwin; as seen in the February 2012 issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News

People are shocked when they learn that many of the parks in the U.S. have playground safety surfaces that are not safe, or can cause disease on top of injury. Most playground surfaces aren't maintained properly, so they lack the appropriate safety, even if they were installed properly.

Many often say, "Hey, when we were kids, we played on dirt, grass, even concrete and asphalt...and we survived."

While that may be true, facts don't lie. Since the creation of Safe Kids (1988), a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental childhood injuries, their efforts have helped reduce fatal accidents by 45 percent in the United States alone.

However, another Safe Kids report states that the public playground injury rate among children ages five and under doubled from 1980 to 2000. The more recent 2007 Safe Kids report shared that there was an increase of 21 percent in fall-related deaths for children in the United States from 2000-2004.

There are some arguably fundamental flaws regarding the data used for establishing playground safety standards, testing parameters and equipment. Most of what we know about playground impact safety comes from automotive industry testing that uses cadavers and volunteers. Most certified playground inspectors admit they don't feel many playground safety surfaces commonly sold as "safe" are truly safe for the playgrounds they are installed in.

As playground safety continues to be a problem, and a complex one, this discussion will continue in a future issue. In that issue we will compare different types of playground surfaces, their relative safety, maintenance requirements, initial and ongoing costs, and longevity.

No Fault Teams Up with King James!

One of professional basketball's brightest stars, LeBron James, and No Fault Sport Group have teamed up in an initiative to build innovative and safe playgrounds.

No Fault partnered with the LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF) to provide three new playgrounds in disadvantaged neighborhoods as part of their Playground Build Initiative. The first playground debuted in New Orleans, La. in February 2008, the second opened in Phoenix, Ariz. in February 2009, and the third in Dallas, Tex. in February 2010.

All three playgrounds were built in conjunction with the NBA All Star Game in each city, supporting the NBA CARES program, the league's global community outreach initiative.

No Fault was originally contacted by the LJFF through their relationship with Nike. No Fault and the Nike Grind program have had a long-term relationship, utilizing recycled (rubber) Nike tennis shoes in sport and recreational surfaces.

The LJFF has aligned with businesses such as No Fault for the purpose of a hands-on approach to community assistance, helping create or re-create the places where families live, learn and play.

The LJFF is committed to empowering children and families. Playgrounds bring children and families together for quality time. By building a unique play space for children, they are encouraged to challenge themselves physically in an imaginative, fun and safe environment.

The large gold crown graphics in the playground surface is a unique touch that gives a nod to LeBron's nickname of "King James." This attention to the finest detail truly sets No Fault in a class above all competitors.

Says Jakki Nance of the LJFF, "We have thoroughly enjoyed working with No Fault on the LeBron James Family Foundation playground projects. Their product design was innovative, their soft surfacing provides a safe place for kids to play, and the fact that No Fault uses recycled materials was very important to us."

No Fault is proud to have had an opportunity to be a member of LeBron James' team on this worthy effort!
