DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET

Deacon Joe Murphy is inviting all Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph during this Holy Lenten Season to recite the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy. It is a Roman Catholic devotion based on the visions of Jesus reported by St. Mary Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938).  She was a Polish sister of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and canonized as a Catholic Saint in 2000.  Faustina stated that she received the prayer through visions and conversations with Jesus. According to her diary, the Chaplet's prayers for mercy are threefold: to obtain mercy, to trust in Christ's mercy and to show mercy to others.

The Chaplet begins with the Sign of the Cross and an optional opening prayer. It then continues with:

1. Our Father

2. Hail Mary

3. Apostles Creed

4. On singular Our Father beads, the following prayer is said:

"Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world."  (1x)

5. On small Hail Mary beads:

"For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."  (10x)

A decade of the Chaplet (prayers no. 4 and 5) may be said 5 times, like in the Rosary prayer.

6. The Chaplet concludes by saying the "Trishagion" prayer:

"Holy God, Holy Might One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."  (3x)

 UNSUNG HERO

Wikipedia defines Volunteering as an altruistic activity, intended to promote good and improve human quality of life.  Volunteerism is the act of selflessly giving your life to something you believe, free of pay.  If you look closely, there is a picture of Katherine Custer embedded in the definition.  Kathy and her husband,Ron moved to Sea Isle almost 20 years ago.  Since that time, Kathy has become a very active member of our Parish:  she is a Eucharistic Minister, serves on Parish Council and the Capital Campaign.  She tastefully leads the Environment Committee, which means she plans and organizes the overall physical environment and appearance of our parish facilities.  Her eye for detail, style, flair and design-sense helped make the auditorium more "church-like", regularly beautifies our worship space and highlights our holidays and holy days in a very special way.

Kathy also finds time to handle the press and PR, not only for St. Joseph's, but for many of our local groups and ministries.  With her husband Ron, Kathy actively participates with the Knights of Columbus.  She can be found at most events in Sea Isle City with camera in hand and a smile on her face.  She is a friend to all and a stranger to none.  Kathy's volunteering is handled with a grace and aplomb that she seamlessly fits into a full life that includes work for the City of Sea Isle, writing for the Sea Isle Times, supplying photos for this newsletter, frequent travel, deep friendships and a loving marriage.  She is a gracious hostess and a wonderful friend.  She is positively an UNSUNG HERO of St. Joseph's and we are blessed to have her.

BISHOP MCHUGH STUDENT WINS VFW POST 1963 2012 PATRIOT PEN COMPETITION

 Patriot pen

Each year, the members of VFW Post 1963 participate in the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Patriot Pen Competition.  The annual essay contest is open to students in grades 6 to 8, who are enrolled in public, private and parochial schools or home-study programs with the US. The theme of the 2011-2012 competition is "Are You Proud Of Your Country"?

This year's Post 1963 Patriot Penn winner is Edy Kennedy, a seventh grade student at Bishop McHugh.  During a student assembly, Edy received a certificate of achievement and a check for $100.  She will now advance to the regional level of competition which could lead her to the national finals and a $10,000 savings bond.  Congratulations, Edy and best of luck!!

Shown with Edy in the picture above are (from left) VFW Post 1963 Junior Vice-Commander Mike Rodgers, Senior Vice-Commander Joe Smith and Bishop McHugh Principal Laura Tomlin.
