ST.JOSEPH'S ALTAR SERVERS

When Father Perreault became our Pastor, there were very few altar servers.  At a parish council meeting, the topic was discussed and Mike Jargowski and Marie Peltier took on the task of recruiting, training and scheduling more servers.  With Father's help and encouragement, they received a list of interested boys and girls from both Bishop McHugh and Religious Education.

With the help of Ali Robinson and Liz Dever, the training process began.  Each year  young people from both Bishop McHugh and Religious Education are encouraged to participate.

There are now 15 altar servers and 4 new recruits.  We are very proud of this group.  In fact, several boys and girls have remained with us after they have graduated and moved into high school.  Hats off to them!!

For the past few summers, the schedule has been very tight.  The servers are assigned almost every week.  With the fall season and fewer Masses, their participation becomes less pressing.  With the completion of our beautiful new Church, the schedule will not be as demanding.

The Parishioners of St.Joseph's want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of our servers and to the Mike, Marie and the team that manages this program for the great job that they do.  Please take time to thank them!!!!!

Unsung Heros

UNSUNG HEROES

Once again, we are honoring two "Unsung Heroes" of St. Joseph's.  They are Catherine Verna and Julie Bry who are members of the Environment/Liturgy Committee.  These women are responsible for making the Church and Auditorium beautiful for each Mass and that is no easy job.  It means addressing the overall physical environmental needs and appearance of the parish facilities inside and out.  They ensure that we have clean linens on the Altars, clean vestments for the priests and appropriate liturgical colors in place at all times.

Catherine bases their work on the quote "to delight in externals until we have the good fortune to grasp the substance".  That is the heart of the book "To Crown the Year" which is the text that Catherine and Julie use as a reference to decorate the Altars.  There are specific colors required for different times and events during the Liturgical year. Examples are listed below:

Green for OrdinaryTimes

Lavender for Advent

White/Gold for Christmas

Purple for Lent

Red for Palm Sunday

White for Holy Thursday

Red for Good Friday

Purple for Holy Saturday

White/Gold for Easter Sunday

Red for Pentecost

You can see what attention must be paid to changing the altar linens and banners, floral bouquets, dusting, watering plants and many odds and ends that are not even mentioned here.  This team is found at the Church every day.  Kathy Custer who oversees this program suggested these two women, whose work is so vital to the Parish and yet is so unknown, be honored this month.

Besides these numerous duties, Catherine is a Eucharistic Minister, a Catholic Daughter, a member of the Marion Guild and the Prayer Line. Julie is also a Eucharistic Minister, a lector, a Catholic Daughter, and a member of the Marion Guild, Church Pride and the Prayer Line.

There doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day for all of the work they do to beautify our Parish.  We are so grateful to both of you!!!!!

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS HOST ANNUAL CARD PARTY

   Card Play

Kay Higginbotham and Pat Halfpenny are featured in the above photo.

On Friday, October 21, over 120 card players attended the 20th Annual Card Party that was held at the parish auditorium.  The attendees enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch and sweets.  In addition to a fun-filled afternoon of cards and camaraderie, they generously purchased chances to win baskets of cheer and tombola prizes.  The profits from these sales are used to fund the Catholic Daughters' charitable commitments.  Vera McQuillen, the Catholic Daughters' Regent, said she was "thrilled with the positive response from the community and was thankful for all the behind-the-scenes work that the Catholic Daughters' members performed to make this event so successful.  Special thanks  to Kay Higgenbotham, The Card Party Chair, who coordinated the event.
