ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH WELCOMES NEW DEACON

Earlier this summer, our Pastor, Father Perreault, announced the appointment of Deacon Joseph Murphy to St. Joseph's Church.  Deacon Murphy joins Deacon Liam O'Clisham in providing pastoral services to the members of our parish.

Deacon Murphy is a 1971 graduate of Northeast Catholic High School for Boys.  He and his wife of 40 years, Linda are both originally from the Kensington section of Philadelphia.  When they were first married, they lived in Port Richmond, where they attended Nativity BVM Parish with their four children, Jen, Joe, Mike and Dan.  In the 1980's, the Murphys moved to St. Christopher's Parish in the Somerton section of Philadelphia and later their children attended Archbishop Ryan High School.

In 2005, Deacon Joe retired after 33-year career as a law enforcement officer in Philadelphia, where he worked his way up the ranks and became a Detective in Special Investigations with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.

Upon retirement, he and Linda moved to Ocean City, where they currently reside and enjoy as much time as possible with their 12 grandchildren.  The Deacon recently completed six years of Diaconate Formation and was given the Parish assignment of serving the people of St Joseph Church.  He also has extensive experience with 12-step programs and is available to assist anyone who wants help.  He has been given the Diocesan assignment of a prison ministry which will be in connection with his 12 step work.

Please take the time to greet our new Deacon and welcome him to our parish community! He is a very friendly, approachable man who happily responds to "Deacon Murf" and is very eager to meet all of our parishioners.  When you meet him, you can also congratulate the Deacon on catching his first White Marlin - 63"!! He was very excited telling how he, with assistance of 2 other fishermen, took 45 minutes to land the fish about 80 miles off the coast in the Baltimore Canyon.  Deacon Murf seems very capable of telling a hearty "fish tale" but, according to the picture below, this one appears to be gospel!

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR BISHOP MCHUGH

Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School is proud to announce Mrs. Laura Tomlin as its new principal.  An experienced educator, Laura has taught at the school for ten years.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in Education both from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

One of Mrs. Tomlin's primary goals is preparing students for the 21st century, and she is certainly looking forward to this challenge.  One way that she sees Bishop McHugh students meeting this goal is through Workshop Wednesday.  The new principal explains, "This is an exciting project that I am pleased to continue.  Workshop Wednesday was implemented last year as part of our Middle States accreditation process.  It is a learner-centered project that enables teachers to integrate the curriculum via technology and engages the children in the planning process.  Our students are given the opportunity to have input into what they would like to learn--what interests and motivates them. The project culminates with an assembly showcasing our students' amazing work."

Mrs. Tomlin points out how schools now have the opportunity, thanks to technology, to connect with schools from around the world.  "It is very exciting for children to have the ability to research and discuss issues with students from different cultures and countries.  They are able to gain a global perspective through communication with their peers."  She is fortunate to have a state-of-the-art school, equipped with Smart Boards in every classroom.  This resource enables students to remain more engaged through interactive computer-based learning.

Laura and her husband, James, have two children, Zachary and Catie.  Both are students at Bishop McHugh.  Reflecting on her new position, the new principal states, "I am thrilled to begin a new chapter in my career at Bishop McHugh.  We provide an excellent education for our students while maintaining our Catholic identity. I cannot wait for the new school year to begin."

We wish her all the best for a successful school year!!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The St. Joseph Religious Education Program strives to bring the children in our parish and their parents into a closer union with Jesus Christ.  There is little in the ministerial life of the parish which is more important than supporting, in word and deed, the faith life of the next generation.  Directors, Jean Pittaluga and Karen Torroni, with the assistance of seven other teachers, enable approximately 100 parish children (regardless of what school they attend) to receive sacramental preparation and participate in weekly classes incorporating prayer and faith building activities.  The program is based on the premise that it is critically important to lead by example and not only to give children knowledge but also to provide them with the tools necessary to live their faith every day.  The curriculum is designed to enable students to proactively learn more about the teaching of Christ and his Gospels.

Besides classroom instructions, students learn and participate in service, community, and other faith-based projects.  For example, at the start of each year, every class at all grade levels is assigned a Work of Mercy.  The classes then design and complete activities based on their Work, such as a food drive or writing letters to individuals in hospitals or nursing homes, etc.  Some of the other events throughout the year include Penance prayer services, Rosary recitations, seasonal prayer celebrations, and involvement in other community-based projects.

The teachers all participate in continuing education classes to remain current in the Church teachings.  Most parishioners have no idea of the amount of time that Mrs. Pittaluga, Mrs. Torroni, and the other teachers spend developing lesson plans, planning activities, and preparing students to receive the Sacraments, etc.  St. Joseph parish is so fortunate to have such a dedicated staff.  Still, this program would not be as successful as it is without the support of Father Perreault, the parents, and the other supportive groups and members of our parish family.

Classes are held every Monday for grades 1 through 4 and Tuesday for grades 5 though 8 from September through May.  More information about this program and the calendar for 2011-12 can be found on the website.

Our prayers for a happy, blest, and successful year are with the students, families, and teachers alike.

JOBS WELL DONE!!

As unbelievable is it may seem, the summer has quickly come to an end!

At this time, it seems fitting that we recognize the dedication and commitment of many parishioners who generously contributed their time and talent to support the eleven weekend Masses each week during the summer.

This contingent of 130 volunteers includes: altar servers, extraordinary ministers, greeters, lectors, musicians and ushers.  The support and dedication of the parishioners of St. Joseph's Church is truly amazing!

Also, let's not forget the great job of our parking lot director, Bud Brady.  Without him, cars would be circling the block for the entire hour instead of fitting in the lot within an inch of the car in front of them.

It is also with deep gratitude that we thank our visiting priests who make it possible for the Parish to offer our parishioners and visitors an abundance of weekend masses during the summer.

Many thanks to one and all!!!
