COMMITMENT WEEKEND RESULTS

Last weekend was the parish's second Commitment weekend where the focus at all Masses was updating all friends of St Joseph about our Connecting in Faith Appeal and asking for your continued financial support.  As you heard in the remarks made by both the pastor, Father Perreault, and Kathy Walters, the chairperson of the campaign who is pictured above, to the credit of many, many, people we have reached our minimum goal of $2,000,000 in just two years, one year ahead of schedule.  "This has been a total parish effort - full time parishioners, "snow birds", seasonal owners, guests and friends of St Joseph."  "However, this is not the end given the fact that the final cost of the new Church is estimated to be between $7.1 and $7.2 million dollars. We will still have a significant financial commitment to pay down."

People were surprised to hear during the talks that the cost of the Church when it was originally built in 1884 was $4,342.45 .  Everyone seemed very impressed with the progress that has been made in the fundraising and also the way that the campaign has been run thus far. Many commented on the speed of the construction itself.

We sincerely thank you for your generosity in contributing $8,200 in the second collection last weekend, which will support our Connecting in Faith Appeal.  It is very much appreciated.

NEWSLETTER INFO

If you have any suggestions, ideas or questions about the newsletter, please contact Kathy Maguire at 215 680 0526 or email to KKJM22@aol.com.  This is a work in progress so we welcome all ideas. We are going to keep it to news relating strictly to St. Joseph Parish.

FROM THE PASTOR

I am pleased to welcome you to the first issue of The Carpenter, St. Joseph Parish Newsletter.  The purpose of this monthly newsletter is to inform and educate all parishioners and other friends of St. Joseph about what is going on in the parish such as regularly scheduled activities, special events, religious education, capital campaign updates and other noteworthy news.  One of the features each month will be to "spotlight" people who generously contribute their time and talent to the various ministries the parish offers.  My hope, for those of you who go back to your permanent home after the summer and for those who go South to follow the sun in the fall, is that you will find this newsletter a means to stay connected with new from St. Joseph's.

Lucy,

LUCY JARGOWSKY - UNSUNG HERO

When the decision was made to publish a monthly newsletter, one of the suggestions was to spotlight the "Unsung Heroes" of the Parish.  The first name mentioned by everyone was Lucy Jargowsky. She has been a member of St Joseph's Parish since she was a child.  She married her husband, Bernard who was known to everyone as Jiggs, and convinced him to stay in Sea Isle.  They had six children.  Lucy attends Mass every day, usually sitting in the first pew on the right. She is a charter member of the Catholic Daughters and a Eucharistic minister at Mass.  Lucy also delivers the Eucharist to sick members of the Parish. Throughout the years, Lucy has been involved in numerous activities in the Parish.  One of her most important contributions these days is laundering the Purficator and altar linens.  The Purificator is a sacred cloth which covers the Chalice and is placed under the Paten.  It must be handwashed.  The water from the washing cannot go down the drain or where people walk since it was used to wash the Chalice and may still contain parts of the Body of Christ.  So Lucy pours the water over her garden when she completes the washing.

As you can imagine, Lucy was extremely reluctant to have an article written about the amount of her volunteer work. Anyone who knows Lucy can tell that St. Joseph's is an important part of her life. According to Lucy "St. Joseph's should charge me rent" because she spends so much time there. "It's not a chore; it's something that makes me really happy".  Lucy claims that if people realized how much they get back from volunteering, there would be many more people willing to give of their time.

After reading about how busy Lucy is, you may be amazed to hear that she is 90 years old.  Her son, Mike, said that there have been times when, in extremely bad weather, Lucy was the only person at Mass.  He would always tell here that in those situations, they will pick her up but she is very independent.  Lucy says that Jules Verne once said ,"everyone gets old but you don't have to act old".  Lucy is living proof of that and a wonderful example for the rest of us of unselfishness and how giving keeps you young.

DONOR RECOGNITION

Contributors to the Building Campaign will be recognized in one of two ways - either on the Tree of Discipleship or on a Donor Plaque.  A large wall in the narthex has been reserved for this purpose.  Many people have paid their gift in full while others are making payments over time.  For those paying over time, names will be listed as long as the payment terms are being kept current.  We encourage all those who may have fallen behind to catch up now or call the Parish center should you need to adjust the terms of your pledge.  Our current target date for finalizing the names that will be displayed on the Donor Wall when the church doors open is August 15.  Subsequent updates to the Wall will occur on an annual basis.

As a reminder, donors who contribute $1,000 or more will be recognized on the Tree of Discipleship while those that contribute $100 or more but less than $1,000 will be listed individually on the Donor Plaque.  Contributions less that $100 will not be listed individually but will be grouped together and displayed as "friends of St.Joseph".

UPCOMING EVENTS

CONCERT OF CELEBRATION & PARISH DINNER

Two special events have been planned to celebrate the opening of our new Church.  On April 22, 2012 at 3:00pm there will be a Concert of Celebration and Worship performed in our new Church.  It will be produced and directed by Carl Granieri.  Carl is a well-known musician, the President of Carl Granieri Orchestra and the force behind the Christian Outreach Ministry, Hearts a Fire 4 God.  After the concert, a parish dinner of celebration will take place starting at 5:45pm at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.  Ticket information will be available soon.  Please mark your calendar and plan to attend!

CLUB BOX SEATS - PHILLIES, FLYERS, EAGLES

This year we have added club box seats for a Phillies Game to our sports raffle.  If you have never had the opportunity to see a game from a club box, this is a great chance to win one.  As the saying goes, "You have to play to win".  The ticket donation is $10 and supports building our new Church.  Tickets are available before Masses or by calling Ann at 609-263-1636.
