Back To School Jitters Turn into Excitement

Pencils are sharpened, textbooks are crisp, and yet, there are still children who won't be able to choose and own books they want to read. That's how Book Trust is making a difference.

Just as teachers have been getting their classrooms ready, we've been getting our program up and running, training teachers, and prepping for our first month of book orders. Over 25,000 students will participate in the program this year. They are just beginning to dream of having books of their own---books they get to choose and take home with them. We can't wait to make their day---every month!

We urge you to imagine, to believe,
& to give our kids a hand up by

Teachers Talk, We Listen

Feedback is critical to our success. Over the summer, we updated and improved our teacher training module to reflect feedback from our Book Trust teachers. There is a now a full-course for new teachers in addition to a short review for returning teachers---thanks to the generosity of TeleTech's engineering and design teams.

Book Trust teachers and managers are now logging on to the BookMark ordering system in preparation for starting up the program this month. Additional teacher resources for using Book Trust as a tool in the classroom and ideas for involving families with the program are available here

West Seattle Elementary Awarded Target Grant

TargetWest Seattle Elementary School was recently awarded a grant from Target for $15,000 to enable their entire school to participate in Book Trust. The program was introduced in West Seattle in 2007, serving 542 students in Kindergarten through fifth grades. After the first year, only Kindergarten was able to participate due to a shortage of funds. We are thrilled that Target has generously supported the program to again allow all K-5 grade students to participate this school year. Thanks to the West Seattle Elementary School leadership for securing these funds.

Please join us for a book delivery and celebration on Thursday, November 29 at 9:30 am. Click here for more details.

Tremendous Support in Our Founding Community
A very big thank you to Bohemian Foundation

Book Trust has been fortunate to have the continued support of Bohemian Foundation for our program in Poudre School District in Fort Collins, CO through their Pharos Fund grant process.Bohemian Foundation

"The Pharos Fund allows us to support local nonprofits in the important work they do in our community," said Cheryl Zimlich, Bohemian Foundation board member. "Our goal is to help nonprofits maximize their impact through programs and activities designed to empower youth and enable them to gain access to the resources they need to thrive."

Book Trust's mission directly connects to Bohemian Foundation's goal to develop youth into productive members of society. Bohemian Foundation is continuing to look at how to strengthen the future of our youth. As Cheryl explains, "Providing youth of Fort Collins every opportunity to become proficient readers by third grade helps accomplish this directly. Therefore, Book Trust is a natural fit."

Thank you, Bohemian Foundation, for showing your invaluable support for Fort Collins, CO.

Maui Teacher Spotlight:
How Mrs. Simpliciano turns on light bulbs

As a ten year veteran at her school, Janell Simpliciano experiences the struggles students face as they learn to read every day. When Book Trust was introduced to her classroom in 2007, it opened up a whole new world for her students. Having the opportunity to choose and own books sparks their interest, provides inspiration, and makes reading fun. Mrs. Simpliciano, 2nd grade teacher at Princess Nahi'ena'ena Elementary School on Maui, recently shared with us how Book Trust is making an impact in her classroom.

Janell SimplicianoFor many of her students, Book Trust provides the first opportunity they've had to own a book of their very own. Janell works with parents by suggesting reading level appropriate books so they feel confident sitting down with their kids to pick out books each month. For kids who are not able to choose their books at home, she sits with them at recess, talking about what gets them excited about reading and helping them pick out their own books.

Each day Mrs. Simpliciano and her students have two to three read-alouds where students are encouraged to engage in the story and talk about the characters while exploring their imagination. Using the Scholastic bonus points gained through Book Trust orders, she regularly replenishes her class library with books she knows her students will be interested in based on their own Scholastic orders.

When her students are interested in what they are reading she sees,
"a click, when a light bulb goes off, when it is something they love, they will try really hard looking at the pictures--then the words--and work so hard to learn."

Thank you Mrs. Simpliciano for your
tireless work creating lifelong learners!
