Dreams Really Do Come True
Excitement builds as students race into desks dreaming of what will become reality--books of their own
We celebrate Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech this month on August 28. This famous address rocked the nation and changed history forever as a defining moment in the American Civil Rights Movement. According to U.S. Representative John Lewis, who also spoke that day as the President of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, "By speaking the way [Dr. King] did, he educated, he inspired, he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations." At Book Trust, we also dream. We imagine a world where literacy removes barriers and provides all children with the tools to navigate life successfully. We are excited to start another year of the program serving over 25,000 students in nine states in 121 schools.
Our goal is to add more than 580,000 books to home libraries of students from low-income families this year alone. Join us.
We urge you to imagine, to believe,
& to give our kids a hand up by

Maui Paint Out Has Artists Dreaming
Artists gather to relax and gain inspiration
Book Trust recently hosted a Paint Out to thank Hawaii-based artists who will generously donate artwork to the art extravaganza to be held on November 17th. Artists came from as far away as Oahu to take in and express the beauty of Hawaii through paint and sculpture. Many plein air artists took advantage the ever changing shadows and changing colors of the waters of La Perouse Bay, while others took the day to relax and gain inspiration. The Hula Honeys provided music and hula to set the mood, and Sarah Shaines generously donated neck and shoulder massage services to help the artists relax and unwind. Michael Clements and Jeff Johnson show off their creations.
Some of the pieces of art created at the Paint Out will be available for purchase at the Art Extravaganza: A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Books art auction this fall. The auction will be on November 17th in Wailea, Maui and will include pieces from some of Hawaii's best-loved artists. More information coming soon.

Turning Unknown Dreams into Reality Reluctant reader can't put his books down
At Book Trust, we often hear stories of how reluctant readers on the first day of school are transformed by the end of the school year. Read the story of Alexis, whose mom and dad had just been deported to Mexico causing him to completely disengage from school:
Alexis started the first grade by refusing to read. He was far below grade level and chosen by the Reading Recovery teachers to receive one-to-one reading intervention. Usually, the one-to-one reading time, with lots of positive reinforcement, quickly changes reluctant students' view towards reading.
Alexis, on the other hand, shut down and refused to read even one-to-one. Alexis hated to read, but Alexis loved lions and tigers. Thanks to Book Trust, the Reading Recovery teachers, and our school library, we were able to inundate Alexis's day with books about big cats. Slowly, Alexis came out of his protective shut-down state of mind and opened up to learning. Books became Alexis's life line and he held on tightly. Now, I can barely get Alexis to stop reading and do anything else in class! He devours books!
Thanks to Book Trust, he has a library of books for him at his aunt's house. Even though his family is still separated, Alexis has a bookshelf full of comfort at home.

Final WordsFrom Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, August 28, 1963:
"Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood."
