Celebrate Eric Carle's Birthday June 25

Are You Very Hungry for Books?
June 22 is the first day of summer. Kids are out of school. Are they reading?

This month, we honor Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, who celebrates his 83rd birthday on June 23. Summertime presents a fabulous opportunity for kids to take a break from play and spend some time reading books. So, get out of the summer heat and eat up some books---or read with a child to help them overcome the summer learning loss. You can even spend some time playing with kids with fun Hungry Caterpillar activities from Scholastic Teachers--click here.

Have fun reading with kids and
stretching their imaginations!

Hungry Caterpillar
We are anxiously tallying the totals of all books purchased. Next month, we can't wait to unveil our final number for the 2011-2012 school year.
Thanks for getting books into the hands of kids from low-income families. We couldn't do it without you!
Regional Boards Make a Difference
Book Trust Regional Board Members Are the Boots on the Ground in Our Communities---Join Today.

Regional Boards are critical to Book Trust's success---they are the boots on the ground in the regions where Book Trust has the greatest presence. The primary responsibility of Regional Board members is to raise awareness and resources required to maintain and grow the Book Trust program in a given region. Regional Board members are also responsible for building goodwill and advising the National Board. A big task indeed!

Regional Boards are currently active in Denver, Maui and Oahu. All three boards had an incredibly successful year! The Denver Regional Board worked hard to introduce new people to Book Trust's program and helped Book Trust raise $200,000 for the program by hosting our inaugural Vino & Libri event in May in Denver.

The Maui Regional Board brought in over $50,000 through our HUI member program and helped spread awareness through a Feed & Read campaign with the Maui Food Bank. And the Oahu Regional Board developed relationships with local corporate sponsors, including Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods, to ensure all Book Trust Oahu students would have the opportunity to choose and own books this year. Thank you to all of our regional board members for their continued support!

This summer we're launching a regional board in Fort Collins, and we are actively seeking individuals who are passionate about literacy, access to books, and the work Book Trust does. We're also seeking additional board members in Denver, Maui and Oahu.

If you're interested in learning more or becoming a Regional Board Member in Colorado, please email Michelle Striker and in Hawaii, please email Ann Nicol.
Give a Big Hand to Joan, a Book Trust Volunteer in Colorado
Book Trust Makes an Impact on Students---and Volunteers

In her own words from Joan Ishiwata, a Book Trust Volunteer:

Recently, when I decided to retire, family and friends asked me what I was going to do with my free time. I responded that, among other things, I wanted to do something to help kids learn to read. Not a surprising response, given my love of reading. But, there was more to it. I was retiring at a time when a staggering number of kids were failing to read proficiently by the third grade. I wanted to do something to help reverse that trend.

Last December I took a step in the right direction when I volunteered at the local Barnes and Noble store and gift-wrapped purchases for tips to benefit Book Trust. As I learned more about the organization, I recognized the advantages of its innovative and far-reaching approach to help address the increasingly urgent problem of childhood illiteracy, especially among children from low-income households. I knew it was where I wanted to volunteer and, fortunately, there was a place for me.

I can best describe my volunteer experience as one "aha" moment after another. Like when I volunteered at a book distribution and felt the palpable joy and excitement of 1st graders eagerly waiting to receive and read the books they had ordered. And, when I saw kids' eyes light up, almost in disbelief, at a Project Homeless event, when they found out they really could choose a book and take it home, free. And, doing office work, entering survey data and scanning kids' thank you letters--letters that expressed, in the kids' own words, a new-found confidence and hope for their future. Comments like, "I love Book Trust because now I read to my family and friends and everyone I can." And, "I will always, always, always read books, maybe even in college."

Thank you for sharing--and volunteering--with Book Trust, Joan.
