Happy Valentine's Day!
At Book Trust, we love reading. And we love putting books into the hands of children who otherwise cannot afford them. This month, their favorites may include The Day it Rained Hearts, Ruby Valentine Saves the Day, or even My Stinky Valentine. Whatever their hearts' content, this is the month to shower our kiddos with books.
Remember, now through March, you can add $1 onto your Scholastic order form to support kids in need to select and purchase their very own books.

Cory Elementary Students Raise Over $4,000
Cory Elementary School (Denver, CO) requires all fifth grade students to participate in a service project. This year, a group of Cory fifth graders chose to hold a school-wide Read-a-Thon, with pledged proceeds to benefit Book Trust's work in Denver Public Schools.
Four fifth grade students, Devin, Sydney, Ryan, and Skyler worked closely with their teacher, Ms. Christine Boothroy, to plan, promote, and execute a successful school-wide Read-a-Thon. All Cory students were encouraged to join in by obtaining pledges for reading. As a result, Cory families were able to raise over $4,000 to support Book Trust.

Cory students dropped everything to read in the gym as part of the Read-a-Thon to support Book Trust
"I am so proud of my students and their families and friends for supporting reading for so many children in Denver," said Cory Principal, Julia Shepherd.

Book Trust Executive Director, Amy Friedman, was thrilled with the results of this student led community project. "I am very grateful for the efforts of the Cory students, teachers and families in the Read-a-Thon. They worked hard and raised enough money for many children across Denver to be able to choose and own books, children who would not otherwise have been able to do so. We are so impressed, and very excited about their contribution to Book Trust! It really means a lot to us!"
A huge thank you from Book Trust to Cory Elementary School for leading such a successful fundraising and awareness project!

Colorado Lieutenant Governor Garcia Reads Skippyjon Jones to Martinez Elementary Book Trust Students
As part of the Literacy Matters tour in Colorado, Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia and Mile High United Way Executive Director, Christine Benero, participated in a book delivery at Martinez Elementary School in Greeley, Colorado. The visit was part of a statewide tour led by the lieutenant governor to learn from communities about ongoing successful strategies that support early childhood literacy across the state. The feedback will be included in an upcoming plan to improve literacy in Colorado.

After learning about the power of Book Trust from Principal Draper, teacher Ms. Gonzalez, and the student council president, Lieutenant Governor Garcia read Skippyjon Jones to a kindergarten class. Then, along with other community guests, he handed out Book Trust books to students who were eager to share their books with all of the guests. We thank everyone at Martinez Elementary for their enthusiasm and commitment to the program!

Far-sighted and Generous, This Hawaiian Company Knows How the Sun Can Brighten a Child's Future
Pacific Islands Construction, a Hawaii-based company and leader in the green construction movement is working to extend the impact of solar systems to the lives of keiki (children) on Oahu. For each solar system installed this year, PIC will make it possible for one Book Trust student to participate in our program for two years. That means that each sponsored student will have the opportunity to choose and own over 40 books.
PIC believes that every child in this ever changing world needs to be literate, and that fostering a passion for reading will prepare students to be successful in both school and life. Sales of solar systems in the fourth quarter of 2011 have already supported 30 children, enabling them to choose and own over 1,200 books. Awareness of the advantages of solar systems is increasing every day and PIC is looking forward to sponsoring more and more Book Trust students throughout 2012.
Book Trust is proud to be part of the Pacific Islands Construction ohana (extended family). Its mission to create a green world for our kids' futures and to provide a foundation will help them succeed in life truly shows the company's passion and support for Hawaii's children.

Become a Book Trust Corporate Partner Today
Is your company looking for a way to give back to your community? If so, join Book Trust as a corporate partner. Book Trust provides a unique opportunity for companies looking for ways to engage their employees in philanthropic efforts specifically focused on access to books and literacy development for children from low-income families. Today's students are tomorrow's workforce. Ensuring that children develop a passion for reading and life-long learning will guarantee a much stronger economy in the future.
We have recently developed partnerships with several corporations. Some such as TeleTech adopt schools and employees raise money and volunteer to deliver books to students each month. Others, such as Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods, have committed to donating a portion of their proceeds to Book Trust. We also have benefited from corporate partnerships that have developed technology solutions, including training modules for our program.
If you are interested in becoming a corporate partner or know of a company that would be interested, please email booktrustpartnerships@booktrust.org. We create custom packages that align to each company's philanthropic goals.

Always Listen to the Teacher
Amy Allan, Book Trust Teacher, Bailey Gatzert Elementary, WA
"Bailey Gatzert Elementary School has been lucky enough to be part of the Book Trust program for many years. Many of our students and families don't have the resources to build a library of books at home. This program gives them the chance to build their at-home library with wonderful and engaging literature. The students get so excited each month when they get to choose new books. Book Trust allows our students to grow as readers and learners!"
