Greetings!

As the year comes to a close, you might be excited to set new year's resolutions by January 1st.  But there is no rush!  This is actually a great time to assess how your 2011 turned out so you could help determine how you want 2012 to unfold.  Taking time to process what you've experienced can help you feel complete for this year and revitalized for the new year.  Then you could develop 2012 goals that are more relevant for you while also being more enjoyable to pursue.

In this newsletter, you'll find an exercise to help you think about what happened in 2011 so that you could create inspiring direction for 2012.  In January's newsletter, you'll receive information on how to develop goals that you'll want to go for and ways to keep you motivated and on track!

2011 Completion and 2012 Direction

Given that we could always learn from our past, below is an exercise to evaluate what occurred in 2011 to guide our future pursuits.  We'll begin with some questions to prime your thinking and to remind you about what happened in 2011.  Then we'll move in to the exercise for completion and finally what you can consider as direction for 2012. 

The most important thing to remember while thinking about answers to the questions and exercises is to connect with your best self.  No need to bring judgement in to the story of what happened in the last year.  Be as objective as possible and take as much time as you need to get to a positive place before moving forward with the full exercise.

Questions

  • What are you most proud of from 2011?  How did you celebrate your accomplishment?
  • What were your greatest failures?
  • What were you grateful for?
  • What is something you'd like to acknowledge yourself for in 2011?

2011 Completion Exercise

  • List anything that occurred under the following topics:
    • Your successes (including what you're most proud of from 2011).
    • Any surprises (anything you didn't expect that happened this year).
    • Your failures (big or small).
    • Lessons you learned (from your successes, failures, and surprises).
  • Identify and list any themes or patterns you notice from across all 4 topics.   

2012 Direction Exercise

  • How are you different than the way you were a year ago?
  • What would you like to discard from 2011?  (Any failures you'd like to move past? Or any long term goals that no longer feel relevant?) 
  • What would you like to take with you (i.e., any lessons) in to 2012?  And, how could you integrate the lessons of the past year in to your life moving forward?
  • What do you want to focus on in the coming year? (It could be something you've identified from the questions above or something new that is occurring to you.)
Now, make sure you're in the mindset of your best self...then, summarize (in one single statement) what you want in 2012.  You could consider any themes or patterns from 2011 along with any answers from the 2012 Direction Exercise that resonate with you.  The summary could be something like any of the following statements:
  • Enjoy life and smile more!  
  • Trust myself and go for it!  
  • Remember my vision and go for it one day at a time!

Once you've created your statement, you could use this as an easy to remember mantra or guiding principle to inspire and inform the goals you develop in the new year.  Have fun!
