| National Youth Leadership Training
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NYLT is a six day outdoor experience conducted by the Glacier's Edge Council. It is designed to provide each youth with a meaningful Scouting experience intended to enhance their knowledge and create a deeper understanding of his role and responsibilities as a leader, teacher, and role model in his or her troop or crew as well as in their personal life. Registration has now started for both courses. You may download them at the council website. In response to increasing demand, Glacier's Edge Council has made available a second NYLT course week. Space will be limited to the first 48 qualified participants that sign up for each course week and both courses will be offered at Camp Indian Trails. Qualification requirements may be found on the registration materials. The program is designed for both participants from Troops and Venture crews. The course will benefit those that are currently the top leaders in their unit or ones that may be holding those positions in the near future. Course 1: Monday, June 11th to Saturday, June 16th, 2012 Course 2: Monday, June 25th to Saturday June 30th, 2012 |
| National Jamboree 2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 May 1, 2012 Dear Unit Leaders: 2013 Jamboree Update! Thanks again for all of your efforts to recruit scouts to attend the 1st Jamboree at the new Bechtel Summit. I HAVE GREAT NEWS! First, we have filled the first troop and all but 2 slots on the Venture Crew. In even more good news, the national office has recognized that we need more time to recruit scouts so they have EXTENDED THE DEADLINE FOR RETURNING UNITS to the end of May, 2012. That means we need to keep recruiting scouts for the second troop. Currently we have 16 scouts registered for the second troop so we need to sign up 20 more scouts in the next month. Please continue your efforts to help us recruit the needed scouts. I don't want to return the second troop and I certainly don't want to have to tell the 16 scouts who are in the second troop that they won't be able to attend. Information about the jamboree, the Bechtel Summit, and scholarship applications are available on the web. The council web site has a link and you just need to click on it. In addition, if you have any questions, or if any parents have questions I would be happy to help. People can contact me by cell phone (608) 217-5299 or by email crbrandt@wisc.edu. PLEASE HELP US IN OUR FINAL PUSH TO RECRUIT 20 MORE SCOUTS IN THE NEXT MONTH THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY Yours in Scouting, Curtis R. Brandt Chair, GEC National Jamboree Committee Scoutmaster, Troop 164

Rhythm & Booms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again the Glacier's Edge Council has committed to canvassing the crowd to help collect funds for the Rhythm & Booms celebration and their charities. We need approximately 300 people (as many in uniform as possible) to do our job right. Here is how you can help: Have your unit commit to participating by filling out the sign-up form and estimate the number of people from your unit who will help. (This is a great activity for the whole family and we need the estimates to accurately order buses.) NOTE: The Madison Fireworks Fund (Rhythm & Booms) and private contributors, made several substantial contributions to worthy charities (including our Council) from the results of our participation in 2011.
Rhythm & Booms takes place on Saturday, June 30th, 2012; the buses will leave the Scout Service Center at approximately 4:00 p.m. and we return after the conclusion of the fireworks around 11:00 p.m. **Please make a note that our rain date is Sunday, July 1st.
See the flyer for more information and see you at Rhythm & Booms! |
| Swim checks 2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The pre-camp swim checks have been a popular option for Glaciers Edge Troops camping at the council camps. The cadre of volunteers providing this service spent over 80 hours of their time to provide this option to units. First thanks for their dedication to the council camps. Second if this option is to expand, more trained volunteers will be needed for the council program. As the Swimming Supervisor manual indicates "Swim test conducted by council personnel during or just before summer camp..." To volunteer for 2013 please take a Swimming Supervisor course this summer, and after completion contact the council aquatics committee. For additional information you may call Don Derengowski at 608 798 4773.

| Tidbits from the Training committee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't Let Your Youth Protection Training Expire It has been just about two years ago since the Boy Scouts of American mandated youth protection training for all volunteers. At that time many leaders had to complete the training because they had either not taken it previously or the two year time limit had passed. Please check the expiration date of your Youth Protection training. If almost two years has passed, please complete the training. Training can be taken online or in person with a training facilitator. Be Sure to Edit Your Personal Profile on "myscouting.org" To better serve the training needs of our Scouters, it is important that your personal information in your "my scouting" account be accurate. Most importantly update your profile with your Member ID number and your email address. Please follow these simple steps: - Go to http://www.myscouting.org and sign in. On the left go to the top and click "Update My Profile"
- On this page you will find your name, email address, and address. At the bottom of the page you will find the council name and your Member ID number. If it is not there, please enter it.
- Click "add" and "save profile" boxes. This will link your on-line training records with the BSA training records. Use the training validation process described in last month's e-news to check your training status.
- If you need to find your member ID number, it is on your BSA membership card, and can be found on your unit roster which, your unit leader should have. You can also obtain your ID number by calling the Council Service Center.
| New 2012 Tour Plan Changes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want to bring to your attention one change in the process that is different from the tour permit. No longer are signatures or approvals required for the online process. Instead, as someone fills out a plan online, the required prerequisites for that type of trip or activity will be displayed. For any prerequisites that have not been met (for example, not having someone on a trip who has Hazardous Weather training where this training is required), and before being allowed to submit the form, the person completing the form will have to certify that all prerequisites will be met prior to conducting the trip or activity. Once submitted, an email notification will be sent to your council, chartered organization, committee chair, unit leader, and emergency contact to let them know that a plan has been submitted. Receivers of this notification can log in to MyScouting and review the plan.
Another change impacts when a Tour Plan should be created. It now says that you need a Tour Plan when leaving your Council Boundaries to some place other than your (home) Council Owned camp. It used to say to any Council Owned Property(owned by other Councils).
To access the demo, click:http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/HealthandSafety/Alerts/TourActivityPlan.aspx. The MyBSA login screen appears. Enter your current MyBSA user name and password. It will take you to the tour and activity plan home page, where you can begin and create a new plan.
A training video has been developed that guides you through the application process and can also be shared with your unit volunteers.

- System prompts and warnings are included.
- You will be able to review and fix any deficiencies flagged by the system prior to submitting the plan.
- You can store, retrieve, copy, and reuse completed tour and activity plans.
- Functionality allows you to upload files such as trekking plans and flight plans.
- Unit volunteers who currently have access to the tour and activity plan will be able to view and update all plans submitted for their unit up to the day before the scheduled plan date.
