National Jamboree 2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
summit
Scouting's flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It's a gathering of approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Over the course of 10 summer days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree.
A New Venue: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve
In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia's New River Gorge National River area in order to create The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve (the Summit). The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit will welcome Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013.
Application Deadline is December 30, 2011
Rhythm & Booms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Once again the Glacier's Edge Council has committed to canvassing the crowd to help collect funds for the Rhythm & Booms celebration and their charities. We need approximately 300 people (as many in uniform as possible) to do our job right.
Here is how you can help: Have your unit commit to participating by filling out the sign-up form and estimate the number of people from your unit who will help. (This is a great activity for the whole family and we need the estimates to accurately order buses.)
NOTE: The Madison Fireworks Fund (Rhythm & Booms) and private contributors, made several substantial contributions to worthy charities (including our Council) from the results of our participation in 2011.

Rhythm & Booms takes place on Saturday, June 30th, 2012; the buses will leave the Scout Service Center at approximately 4:00 p.m. and we return after the conclusion of the fireworks around 11:00 p.m.
**Please make a note that our rain date is Sunday, July 1st.

Expanded Options for Cub Scout Resident Camp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be sure to check out the new options for Cub Scout Resident camp for 2012.
Based on the popular Day Camp program Cub Scouts who attend Resident Camp will have two full days of swimming, climbing the Cub Scout climbing wall, BB guns, archery, sports, nature and crafts. The program combines the traditional EBSR Cub Scout Resident Camp with the special Webelos Expedition to helps send these Scouts on the final trail to their Arrow of Light. Scouts will participate in a round robin of activities including swimming, BB guns, archery, sports, nature and Scoutcraft on Saturday and Sunday morning. The highlight of the program will be the Blessing of the Arrows ceremony Saturday evening.
In addition to the two new Cub/Webelos Scout Resident Camp options there will be two sessions of Camp Akela Webelos Resident Camp at Camp Indian Trails and the Cub Scout Resident Camp Boy Scout Preview returns to Ed Bryant Scout Reservation.
St. George's Trek to Philmont Catholic Scouting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DMCCS (Diocese of Madison Committee for Catholic Scouting) is now accepting applications for the biggest Catholic Scouting event in the country. The St. George Trek, at Philmont, takes place every other year, and the next trek is planned for July of 2013, with applications being accepted until April 1, 2012. The St. George Trek is a high adventure leadership program of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) for Catholic Scouts and Venturers at Philmont Scout Ranch. The program brings Catholic high school age Boy Scouts and Venturers from around the country together with selected priests, religious and seminarians for eleven days of backpacking on the trail in the context of a vocation retreat.

Any Catholic Boy Scout or Venturer in the Diocese of Madison who will be fifteen years of age on or before July 1, 2013, and in high school in the fall of 2013 is eligible to apply for the Trek. Female Venturers may also apply, and a female crew will participate if there are sufficient applications. Participants must be emotionally mature, and have the stamina to backpack on mountain trails. As such, a strong background in hiking and camping is highly recommended. They must also meet the Philmont height and weight requirement, which can be found at www.nccs.org. Those selected may only attend St. George Trek one time. Two nominees for the Diocese of Madison will be selected based on their BSA backgrounds and applications, as well as an interview with the DMCCS committee. The nominees applications will then be sent to NCCS (the National committee), who will select Trek participants from nominees across the country.

If you would like to apply to be nominated for the St. George Trek in 2013, applications are available online at www.madisondiocese.org/scouting. You can also call the DMCCS Vocations Chair, Colleen Szerlong at (608) 868-6386 or the Bishop O'Connor Catholic Center (608) 821-3173 with any questions and to request an application. Applications should be received at the Diocese by April 1, and those selected for interviews will be notified by phone before April 9. Interviews with the DMCCS will take place on Saturday, April 14, from 1-6pm at Bishop O'Connor Center in Madison. Two nominees will be selected from the interviews. Their applications will then be sent on to NCCS for selection at the national level.

Please register with the council office so we can plan for the necessary resources to make your training successful. If you have any questions please contact council training chair, Luann Rece at orchidscout@gmail.com

What makes a trained leader?

That seems to be the most asked question with the ever changing answer. January 2012, BSA has changed the requirements to be a "trained" leader with regards to wearing the patch. This is Scouting is no longer required, but is suggested as a supplemental training. All leaders must complete Youth Protection training every 2 years. Be sure to read the Journey to Excellence requirements for training. To see the BSA "What Makes a Trained Leader" document visit: http://scouting.org/filestore/training/pdf/What_makes_a_trained_leader.pdf

Be Sure to Edit Your Personal Profile on "myscouting.org"

To better serve the training needs of our Scouters, it is important that your personal information in your "my scouting" account be accurate. Most importantly update your profile with your Member ID number and your email address.

Please follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to http://www.myscouting.org and sign in. On the left go to the top and click "Update My Profile"
  2. On this page you will find your name, email address, and address. At the bottom of the page you will find the council name and your Member ID number. If it is not there, please enter it.
  3. Click "add" and "save profile" boxes. This will link your on-line training records with the BSA training records. Use the training validation process described in last month's e-news to check your training status.
  4. If you need to find your member ID number, it is on your BSA membership card, and can be found on your unit roster which, your unit leader should have. You can also obtain your ID number by calling the Council Service Center.

Glacier's Edge Council Training Committee Needs YOU!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many of the districts in our council do not have representation on the training committee. To make the position responsibility easier, we have a district training chair for each of the programs- Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing. If you would be interested is serving for a 1 year commitment, please talk to your district chair or district executive. The Council Training Committee meets the 4th Tuesday of the month. Our next meeting will be February 28th beginning at 7:00 PM at the Janesville Service Center. We always need trainers and if you have completed a course, you may volunteer to staff. If you do not know who to contact, email council training chair Luann Rece at orchidscout@gmail.com and your name will be forwarded to the appropriate course director.
