Scouting's flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It's a gathering of approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Over the course of 10 summer days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree.
A New Venue: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia's New River Gorge National River area in order to create The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve (the Summit). The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit will welcome Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013.
Application Deadline is December 30, 2011

All Scouter Pow Wow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTICE: On-line Registration CLOSES on January 11!January 14, 2012Deerfield High School, Deerfield Wisconsin
Catch the Fire of Scouting
The Glacier's Edge Council All Scouter Pow Wow is supplemental leader training at its BEST. It is designed to provide program ideas, resources and FUN for all Scouting volunteers. It is planned so that leaders may return year after year, earn certifications in their chosen fields and keep current on all that Scouting has to offer the youth of our area.
We have arranged the classes in interest areas that we are calling "tracks". A track is a guideline so that you can take all of the classes in that interest area all day if you choose. Tracks are just a planning device so that classes in the same interest area are not held at the same time. You can mix and match classes from any number of tracks.
Make Sure Scouts Play Safe in the Snow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Head injuries sustained during winter activities are a major cause of children's hospitalization. Therefore, the Winter Sports Safety section of the Guide to Safe Scouting was changed in 2009 to include the following passage: "Appropriate personal protective equipment is required for all activities. This includes the recommended use of helmets for all participants engaged in winter sports such as sledding and other sliding activities. The use of helmets is required for the following activities: downhill skiing, snowboarding, and operation of snowmobiles (full-face helmets)."
Essential precautions recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons include the following:
- Sledding should only be done in designated and approved areas.
- Parents or adults must supervise children in sledding areas.
- No one should sled headfirst.
Preferred precautions include these items:
- Young children should wear a fitted helmet.
- Sleds should have runners and a steering mechanism.
- Sledding in the evening should be in well-lighted areas.
- Plastic sheets or other materials that can be pierced by objects on the ground should not be used.
- Sledders should wear layers of clothing.
The November-December issue of Scouting magazine (Page 12) includes an advisory entitled "Play Safe in the Snow," which addresses this subject matter.
As winter begins, the BSA Health and Safety Team encourages you to place this on your council's website and publish it in your council newsletter. This alert is posted on Scouting Safely at Scouting.org. |
