AaronV_running Hi everybody!  Field Director Aaron Vikemyr here just getting ready for a busy summer.  Recently I got an email from Boy Scouts of America telling me about how 16 members were taking the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge.  It got me thinking about all the Scouts and Scout Leaders in our Council.  So I've just joined the President's Challenge, and I'd like you to join me! What's the President's Challenge, you ask? It's a great way for you to be active and have fun. You can choose from two free challenges that encourage you to track your physical activity for an opportunity to earn awards:

·    The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) challenge, which helps people make physical activity a part of their everyday lives
·    Presidential Champions, which challenges you to be more active more often-the more active you are, the more points you'll earn toward our awards

Join my group, and we'll help you stay motivated as you become more active. Here's what you need to do:
·    If you already have a President's Challenge account, log in at http://www.presidentschallenge.org/ and look up our group in the activity tracker using the group number below.
·    If you don't have an account, create a free account at http://www.presidentschallenge.org/, choose which challenge you want to participate in, and look up our group in the activity tracker using the group number below.

Group Number: 101021
Group Name: GlaciersEdgeBSA

Once you join this group, you will be able to:
·    Log your activities and earn points that will count toward our group's total and will help you earn President's Challenge awards
·    See how you're doing compared to other group members
·    Interact with other members in our group forum
·    Add a profile picture that will display in our group (or you can hide your information from other group members, if you prefer)
·    Get even more motivated to be active!

Let's show our Scouts that we are BSAfit!
See you soon!

Cub Scout Roundups
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is not too early to plan your Fall Roundup for Cub Scouts.  The council has marketing supplies to help you:  personalized fliers, personalized postcards (to send to all Cub Scout aged boys in your school district) and lawn signs.  The council has "roundup boxes" for you to help with the roundup logistics:  applications, name tags, pens, sample script,  table signs and much more.  Check with your district membership chair or your district executive for more information on fliers, postcards and roundup boxes.  (The council can get the school district lists and mail the postcards for you).   If you would like help at your roundup, contact your district membership chair.   Lawn signs and other roundup supplies will be at each Super Roundtable this August:  Thursday, Aug 11 at Covenant Presbyterian Church (Madison) and Wednesday, Aug 17 at Camp Indian Trails (Janesville).
Adult Leader Application Process
The Boy Scouts of America is committed to always providing the best possible Youth Protection program for its youth members, their parents, and leaders. To this end, we want you to know of some changes in our Youth Protection training requirements.
The adult leader application is being updated with some changes in our Youth Protection training requirement. The current adult application states that new adult applicants must complete Youth Protection training before submitting their application. However, effective June 1, 2011, new applicants will have 30 days from submitting their application to complete Youth Protection training.
This change allows for immediate processing of the criminal background check and gives the council the contact information it needs to communicate Youth Protection training opportunities to the new applicant. The new adult application will reflect this change, along with some changes to the pre-screening questions that all applicants are required to answer.
If you have any questions about these changes please contact your District Executive or Council Staff.
The summer camp season is here and I am excited about the summer programs that we are offering our Scouts.  If your unit is not participating in a summer program it is not too late.  If you have scouts that would like to attend summer camp but can't go when your Troop is going we can help them get to camp this summer.  Summer Camp is one of the highlights of a scouts career and we want to make sure that we make every effort to offer our scouts a chance to participate.  Now is also the time to start thinking about next year and building your unit budget to make sure that your unit is able to deliver on those plans.  Many units in our Council use the funds from the Popcorn Sale to help scouts pay their way to camp and other outings.  This is a great benefit to our parents because it allows the boys to earn their way and not another financial obligation for the parents.  A well developed year round program for your unit is the start to the budgeting process, ask the scouts what they want to do next year and then build a budget to meet those activities.  If your unit would like to have help developing an annual program plan and budget contact your District Executive, District Chair or District Commissioner and they will be happy to help find someone to walk your unit through the process. We will be holding a camp promotions meeting in December where you will be able to come and hear all about the wonderful opportunities that the Glacier's Edge Council has to offer your Scouts.  We will be getting more information out on this meeting and hope that you will make every effort to have your unit well represented.
I hope to see you as I visit our camps this summer and always remember:  "A well planned program, delivered by a trained leader, with a strong outdoor program, supported by a good commissioner attracts and retains youth!"
