2011 Scouting for Food
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scouting for Food is a council-wide food drive intended to assist local food pantries stock their inventories for the coming summer months. Traditionally, scout units sign up to participate in the drive by giving the council a unit commitment form that names a unit coordinator and requests a number of fliers to give to homeowners in a particular area that they have volunteered to cover. They then distribute the fliers to residential homes on a particular Saturday and come back a week later to pickup food. The 2011 Scouting for Food flier drop-off date in the Mohawk, Wisconsin River, and Yaraha districts is April 9. Food pickup in those districts is scheduled for April 16th. The event will be held at Ed Bryant Scout Reservation, Mauston during the weekend May 6th through May 8th.
Climbing Wall and Climbing Tower ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scouts got you climbing the wall because they have been cooped up too long? How about bringing them out to Camp Indian Trails so they can experience the fun of climbing. They will be in the fresh air, using safe equipment, with trained instructors. Best of all they will be exhausted by the time they get back to camp or home. How do you make a reservation? You can call Rick Elliott 608-295-3309 to make a reservation for a climb. Or call Julie at the Council Office in Madison 608-310-7300 and she will confirm the date with the climbing group and call you back. You then must send in your reservation sheet and associated funds before you are booked. Then all you need to do is show up and have fun. This is a great resource and I encourage your unit to take advantage of it.
We're already ahead of last year, and hope it will continue to go well. Congratulations to Pack 801 (Optimist Club of West Madison, Inc.), and Troop 940 (Optimist Club of Middleton, Inc.) for achieving their President's Club goal already! They'll get all their badges of rank for free next year, and will also receive 5% discount per boy for attending Council Camps next Summer. Congratulations, also, to Troop 11 (Trinity United Methodist Church) for already attaining Blue Chip Level. This family campaign is very important to keeping the Council funded, so we can continue to provide all the great programs Scouting has to offer. Rocket into Scouting (Mohawk Spring recruitment event): Wondering how to recruit new boys into the Pack is always a difficult question. That's why the Mohawk District is going to hold a Carnival-type event at Badger Prairie Park in Verona on Saturday, June 4th. The capstone event will be the opportunity for each boy to launch a model rocket. There will be tons of promotion, but the most important of which will be invite cards for your Cub Scouts to invite their friends. If the Mohawk Packs have not yet signed on for the big recruitment event, the time to do so is NOW! This will be an important event for ALL Packs, to pick up those Tiger Cubs, and get the Tiger Cub Dens organized before Fall, and get the year of Scouting off on solid footing. If you are not already in the loop, please contact Steve Schofield (msiguy1969@aol.com) to coordinate your helpers. We're expecting that ALL Packs will be participating. Mohawk Invitational 500 Pinewood Derby If you were not at Thorstad Automotive on Saturday, March 12th, you missed a WHOLE LOT! This was the best District Pinewood Derby yet! With thanks to Bill Reed and Steve Schofield, of Pack 628, this event would not have happened otherwise. There were tons of activities, prizes, and cars! A DJ was even brought in to keep the action moving. EVERYONE had a great time! Check out a brief video here. We're looking for an even better Pinewood Derby next year. The results of the Pinewood Derby will be uploaded to the Mohawk District page soon. Mohawk District Awards Dinner There's still a little time to nominate your hard working volunteers for the great job they do in keeping your Pack, Troop, Crew, or Ship going. Our Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 7th at Schwoegler's Entertainment Center, 444 Grand Canyon Drive. Volunteers don't get much appreciation for all they do, and this is the time to do it! Find the entire registration packet, including nomination forms here. Come out and help celebrate all the great volunteers in the Great Mohawk District! The BSA Adopt-a-School Program ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The BSA® Adopt-a-School Program is an exciting and comprehensive undertaking that will connect Scout troops and units across the country with schools in their communities. Participating Scouts then work, within clearly defined guidelines, to partner with school administrations and offer the volunteer services that most efficiently meet their school's needs. With each troop/unit offering their school a minimum one-year commitment, meaningful community relationships are built and significant changes will happen in the schools.
Exciting milestones have been set to strengthen the presence and progress of the Adopt-a-School program. By Winter 2011, we plan to meet our goal of 5,000 schools adopted across the country, followed by 15,000 adopted by Fall 2012, and 25,000 schools adopted by July 2013!
The hope at the heart of Adopt-a-School is to build strong, sustaining relationships with these schools... creating thousands of lasting community partnerships across the U.S. Through committed volunteer efforts - from landscaping and clean-up outside the school building to Scouts' active participation in school events throughout the year - the BSA will become a defined presence in improving our nation's schools.
A Note from our Key 3 - David Baker, Stephen Heck & Heidi Gunyon:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New Council President - Please help us welcome and thank David Baker (formally the VP of Administration) as he will be filling in as the Council President until the Council annual meeting.
Council Commissioner Comments
Spring is teasing us. Thanks to Daylight Savings it is light longer into the evening. The robins are back. Trees are budding. Webelos Scouts are crossing over into Boy Scouts. Units are rechartering. Volunteers are leaving the program.
What? When did the exit of volunteers become a sign of spring?
When we cross Webelos Scouts into the Boy Scout program, not all of their parents become active at the Troop level. This goes for parents that were never active in the Pack, as well as those that were. When we recharter, we discover that some adults are no longer active and we cross those names off of our charter.
At this time of year a unit must make sure that each and every (exiting or entering) adult is asked "Would like to be active?" As a leader you know what a difference Scouting makes in YOUR life. Every adult should have the chance to feel that difference in his/her life. There is a place for everyone - no matter what level of commitment, no matter what their skill set might be. The first step is to ask. There is always a list of open positions that need filling.
An obvious place for an exiting active adult is service as a commissioner. In order to meet the needs of all of the units in Glacier's Edge Council, we need to triple the number of active commissioners. With more and more training happening online, there is less human interaction with new leaders. Commissioners are an extremely important link to the success of a unit as they provide friendship and mentoring to the leaders. A unit commissioner has the following duties:
- Visit a meeting of your assigned pack, troop or crew once a month.
- Visit the unit's committee on a regular basis.
- Provide resources, information, friendship and mentoring to unit leaders.
- Help units assess and improve their programs using the BSA's Journey to Excellence program.
- Help units recharter on time.
Please take the time to talk to each adult currently (and previously) associated with your unit. When you suggest ways to be involved, don't forget to mention commissioner service. Oh, and please don't forget to pass the names of interested individuals along to your District Commissioner.
Scout Executive Comments
In Marketing they always talk about the seven points of contact. Basically it means that you need to present your idea or product to the consumer seven times to get a sale. So here I go with another point of contact. SUMMER CAMP, DAY CAMP, CUB SCOUT RESIDENT CAMP -If you are not signed up to attend it is not too late. The summer programs offered by our Council are first class experiences for both the boy and the adults that take part. As a parent of a Webelos Scout I can tell you first hand how much fun I have had with my son at Day Camp, Webelos Shooting Sports Camp and Cub Scout Resident Camp. Experiencing all the things I loved as a kid one more time with my son is something that I will never forget. It is time that is spent together, just him and me, without all the distractions of life. Working on skits, setting up camp, sharing a slushy or choco taco at the trading post are all things that we will remember as a special time together. I can't wait until next summer when he will attend Boy Scout Summer Camp for the first time.
If you ask any scout or any adult that was in scouting as a youth and ask them to tell you about some of their best memories, they will tell you about the time they spent at camp. Camp helps boys grow their independence and self reliance in a safe and nurturing environment. We have many different ways that your son can participate in camp even if your unit isn't planning on attending as a group.
