Thank you to all participants who attended the 2011 All Scouter Pow Wow

The 2011 All Scouter Pow Wow was a huge success.  We had well over 350

A special thank you to those who took the time to fill out the surveys and write

BeAScout

BeAScout is now live! BeAScout is a Google Maps application to help parents find Scout units for their children in any zip code.  This is a very powerful tool; but, it needs unit leaders to populate their "pin" with unit contact information. A step-by-step guide for unit leaders can be found on the council membership page (link:  http://www.glaciersedge.org/membership). Check out this powerful tool at https://beascout.scouting.org/
5 Star University of Scouting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5StarPatchDon't miss out on a great training opportunity being offered on Saturday, January 29, 2011!  The Five Star University of Scouting is a one-day training event that has something to offer to leaders in all Scouting programs.  Five Star is a multi-council event, which provides a best practice and idea sharing environment.
Here are just a few examples of Five Star's curriculum:  All Scouters can earn their bachelors, masters, post-graduate or doctoral degree.  District Committee members can fulfill their training requirements for the District Committee Key.  Commissioners can learn about new tools and techniques so that they can provide great service to their units.  District and Council trainers and Roundtable Commissioners and staff can benefit from taking the Trainer's Edge course.  You can find a full description of all Five Star courses and register for Five Star at http://5starregistration.kintera.org/blc.
This year our guest speakers are Tico Perez, the National Commissioner, and Marty Walsh of the National Office.  They will inform participants what is going on at the national level.
Five Star is Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Lakeshore Technical College located at 1290 North Avenue, Cleveland, WI which is just off I-43 at Exit 137.  The opening ceremony is at 8:30; graduation is at 4:55.  Carpool with other leaders and enjoy a fun day of learning!
The Five Star University of Scouting is a one-day training event that includes almost 70 different courses to help you support the Aims of Scouting and to Deliver the Promise to our youth.
Held annually, 5 sponsoring Councils organize and staff this event The multi-council format provides a wide range of experiences and draws on the special expertise of experienced Scouters in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing programs.
The registration fee for the entire day has not increased for Early Birds. The $35 fee includes lunch and refreshments. This year, the event will be hosted by Bay Lakes Council at the Lakeshore Technical College campus near Cleveland, WI.   Cleveland is north of Sheyboygan, but south of Manitowoc, so plan on a bit more driving this year!
The full flyer with class descriptions and registration info is available here, or online registration is available here.
Glacier's Edge Staff changes:
Due to budget concerns for 2011, the budget review group recommended the elimination of the Southern Lakes District Executive position.  That recommendation was approved by the Executive Committee of the Glacier's Edge Council at the Executive committee meeting on December 20, 2010.  As of January 4, 2011 Doug Dewey is no longer employed by the Glacier's Edge Council.  We wish Doug and his family all the best and thank Doug for his service to Scouting.
Steve Orlovsky will support the District operations of the Southern Lakes District as well as oversee the Council Program Committees.  Staff assignments for Staff Advisor for Council Committees are being reviewed and some changes will be made to spread out some of the work load.
Please direct any questions about these changes to Stephen M. Heck, Scout Executive
Scout Executive Minute
Over the past year I have shared my concerns about the decline in our youth attending a summer program and have asked for ideas on how we can get more boys to camp.  I received very little input or ideas so I started asking people specific questions about why their unit doesn't attend one of our summer programs.  In those conversations I have heard a lot of different reasons for not attending and some of them are very easy to fix.  One of the most common answers that I received is that they really didn't know what programs were offered to the cub scouts.  They also had confusion as to which camps their scouts could attend and what the difference was with the programs.  There were other responses that we are going to work on but they are in areas that don't relate to unit support.  We are fortunate to have a strong group on the cub camping committee that are willing to come to your Pack and explain the programs and do a promotion for your cub scouts and their parents.  All they are waiting for is an invitation.
As I continued my discussions with the adults I asked them if they thought it would be helpful if their Unit selected one person that would head up their summer camp programs.  A person that the District and Council volunteers would communicate with about our summer camping program.  The unit leader  and committee chairs do not have the time to take on another task.  This position would not take a lot of time but could make a huge impact with the number of boys attending our summer camp programs.  Every person that I talked with thought that it was a great idea and they were going to talk with the unit about who would take this position.
I would like every unit to go back to their committee and discuss this suggestion and then get back with me as to who your unit summer program coordinator is going to be.  I will need their name, address, phone, email etc.  I will then take this information to the committees so that they can start making contact with your person.  This is an attempt to make your jobs easier as leaders but more importantly to get more boys to experience the fun of summer camp.
