Hannah Romanowsky draws her aesthetic impulse from a remarkably diverse background in the performing arts, including cross-cultural classical and theatrical dance and the traditional repertoire of Central and Western Asia. A seasoned performer on the proscenium stage, Ms. Romanowsky has been a principle artist with Ballet Afsaneh, Aywah! Ethnic Dance Company, Shuvani, and a founding member of the ethno-contemporary company Wan-Chao Dance.
Hannah is Founding Director of the DanceVersity multicultural youth arts education program. She has over 15 years of experience teaching and choreographing for performing arts schools, dance companies, and community organizations, and is a cherished instructor throughout the San Francisco bay area and beyond. Ms. Romanowsky holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Ethnology and a Master of Arts in East-West Psychology. Her scholarly background in cross-cultural studies and sacred traditions informs her work as an artist and educator.

Persian Dance
Persian neoclassical dance is a solo virtuoso art form highlighting delicate hand flourishes and shoulder accents, fluid arms, and ecstatic turns. The arms float overhead as the dancer glides ethereally across the floor or sinks languidly into beautiful torso extensions. Through fluid shape-shifting the dancer expresses ancient mythical symbology and spiritual longing.
Workshops are available in
classical, contemporary, popular, and folkloric Iranian dance.

Afghan Dance
Basic characteristics of the Afghan women's dance include graceful hand gestures that frame the upper body engagingly coy facial expressions, and beautiful turn sequences. The dance serves as a improvisational solo expression and emotional outlet among women in the community.
This workshop explores the fundamentals of Afghan technique in a delightful choreography. The traditional dances of Attan, the national dance of Afghanistan, and Logari can also be introduced.

Tajik-Uzbek Dance
During her recent residency in Tajikistan, Hannah had the opportunity to train with some of the most highly regarded dance companies in the region.
Learn the fundamentals of Tajik technique, including exuberant turns and expressive arms, and a contemporary Central Asian-inspired choreography to music by the beloved Uzbek singer Yulduz Usmanova.
Regional dances and technique can also be taught.

Trail of the Gypsies
Learn about the unique history and culture of the Romani people as they moved westward from India, bringing their music, dance, and other customs with them. This workshop (or workshop series) can feature a lecture component on Romani history and culture, as well as dance technique.

Turkish Roman
Turkish Roman dance is full of cheeky humor, saucy gestures, and complex pelvic isolations. An exemplar of this form, Hannah delightfully captures the essential qualities that make the Roma such charismatic performers and seamlessly permeates the authentic dance with her own theatrical flair and vivacious charm.

Gypsy Jazz
This workshop highlights the fundamentals of western dance technique through the medium of jazz - with a spunky gypsy flavor! A jazz-gypsy fusion choreography will be taught. Bring a hat - and some sass!
Zambra
While little is known about this illusive dance, the word "zambra" finds its origins in Medieval Spain, where it meant "Moorish party". This choreography, inspired by the unique cultural exchange between the Moors and Andalusian Gitanos, or Gypsies, draws from both Arabic and flamenco technique.

Moroccan Guedra
The guedra is a blessing ceremony belonging to the Tuareg or "Blue People" of Morocco intended to spread good will among the community. The dance is performed almost entirely on the knees and consists of meaningful hand gestures and pulsations that extend out from the fingers. One or two dancers perform while the community forms a circle, singing and clapping with complex interlocking rhythms. Clapping, chanting, and dance technique will be taught in this experiential workshop.

Moroccan Sheikhat
The sheikhat are the professional dancers and singers of Morocco hired to perform for weddings and other family celebrations. In addition to complex torso articulations and rhythmic footwork, the dancer may show off her skills by balancing a tea tray on her head while executing acrobatic floor-work.

Egyptian
Raks Sharki is the dance of Arab women as performed by professionals at family celebrations.
This workshop provides an introduction to Arabic dance technique and history. Classical Egyptian or the folkloric raks al assaya (cane dance) choreography can be taught.
