BC Hydro to Implement New Rate Increases Over the Next Three Years

The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) has been directed by the Hon. Rich Coleman, Minister of Energy and Mines,to reduce BC Hydro rate increases by 50% over the next 3 years.

The 8% increase in rates for 2011/12 will remain in place as previously directed by the BCUC. This increase was put in place April 1, 2012 and will see a monthly increase of $5.40 for BC Hydro customers. For 2012/2013, rates will increase by 7.1% in order to allow for BC Hydro to pay down deferral and regulatory accounts at an accelerated pace.

On April 1, 2013, rates will increase by 1.44% or an average of $1.20 on consumers' monthly bill. Together, the rate increases result in a 17% increase over the next three years, reducing the cumulative impact of the  previously proposed rate increase by the BCUC by approximately 50%.

The rate reduction was achieved by lowering BC Hydro's operating costs and by the Province forgoing $75 million in dividends over the next three years. A statement from Minister Coleman regarding BC Hydro electricity rates can be found here.

Premier Clark Welcomes Inaugural Virgin Atlantic Flight to BC

Premier Christy Clark welcomed Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Atlantic Airways to BC for the airline's inaugural flight from London, U.K. to Vancouver that landed at YVR. Virgin Atlantic will fly to Vancouver four days per week from May - October.

These new flights will add an expected 40,000 passengers to BC's tourism industry, and according to the Vancouver International Airport Authority, spending by these additional passengers is expected to generate $21.5 million in tourism expenditure and create additional jobs in hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. Overall, the new Virgin Atlantic service will add an estimated $10.4 million to BC's GDP.

BC Nurses Union Holds March in Victoria

A march was held by the BC Nurses' Union in Victoria last week that aimed to gather public support as negotiations begin after their collective agreement expired in March, 2012.

A spokesperson for the march, Margo Wilton, co-chairwoman of the BC Nurses' Union South Islands Region, has stated that the province faces a shortage of nurses and hospitals beds and as a result patient care is being compromised. She explained that hospitals and care facilities are overcrowded and understaffed and that many nurses feel they cannot do their jobs properly with the conditions they face.

The current negotiations affect over 30,000 nurses in BC.
