Ybor Chamber
Member Spotlight
Did you know that the Ybor City Museum Society (Society) was the first of more than 80 Citizen Support Organization for Florida's state parks? Established in 1982, they will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary on July 15, 2012, with year long activities.
The Society's mission is to preserve, promote and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of Ybor City and supports the Ybor City Museum State Park (park) by creating exhibits, programming, educational tours, and cultural and historical resources.
Open daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, the park consists of a main exhibit space, housed in the historic Ferlita Bakery building, as well as a beautiful Mediterranean-style garden and a restored cigar worker's casita. The park provides both guided tours of the museum, as well as walking tours of the Historic District.
The Society is the Chamber's next door neighbor. Executive Director, Chantal Hevia and her staff, Elizabeth McCoy, Brian Jeffers and Gina Bowen, are great to work with. Like the Chamber, the Society is known for its annual events promoting the best of Ybor - the Ybor City Heritage & Cigar Festival and the Legacy Awards. They also produce unique events throughout the year, such as the March 1, 2012, Buildings Alive: Architecture Hop.
In addition to the historical and cultural focus of the Society, they also run the Ybor City Museum Store, located next to the state park. You can always find Cookie, Carl or Rosemary behind the counter, eager to help you find just the right Ybor gift.
Next time you have guests in from out-of-town, make sure and bring them to the park for a glimpse into Ybor City's past.

President's Message
Hola -
Sunday's Tampa Tribune Metro Section headline read "65th Fiesta Day - Festival pays tribute to Ybor's Latin roots." I am very proud of what Kris Fernandez, our Chair in 1996-97, said Saturday, "This is the best Fiesta Day in years."
"It takes a village" to pull-off a street-event this good. We had over 70 exhibitors, the majority of which were Chamber members. The Main Stage featured three Latin acts all of which have their origin in the Bay Area. The star of the show was Millie Puente - she had people dancing in the streets to her enthusiastic vocals and the rhythms of her Uncle Tito's timbales.
Let's not forget the talented students from our "arts-magnet schools" that performed on the Centro Ybor Youth Stage. Fiesta Day may be the first opportunity for them to perform in public. And, that's how young performers get inspired to practice and grow.
All of Ybor City's historic social clubs participated: Centro Asturiano, Marti-Maceo, L'Unione Italiana and Circulo Cubano through their Krewe of Mambi. In addition, we also had the Ybor City Museum Society out promoting their upcoming Buildings Alive: An Architectural Hop through Ybor City.
We had great support from the City of Tampa and YCDC, but it wasn't just logistical or financial. Mayor Buckhorn and his Chief of Staff, Santiago Corrada, were out on La Setima meeting and greeting guests. And, Councilman Mike Suarez brought three generations of his family to enjoy the day.
We were blessed to have "Chamber of Commerce weather," the leadership of our Fiesta Day Committee, the participation of the majority of our "hands-on" Board of Directors and the dedicated service of Chamber staff from both Member Services and the Visitor Information Center.
From what I heard, our top sponsors Florida Blue, BB&T and Centro Ybor were all very pleased with the wonderful turn-out. And, I have to give our Media Sponsors: Bright House Networks, CBS Radio and the Tampa Bay Times credit for their excellent promotion.
Ciao, Tom Keating
